Will It Bomb? Weekend of 6/6/08

It’s Friday, everybody! It’s also the beginning of a new month and summertime is almost upon us. Here in New England, where unpredictability seems to be standard, we are slated to experience some gorgeous warm weather! Whatever weather we have, rain or shine, it’s always a great day for a movie. As you will see very shortly, this week’s edition of WIB? is overstuffed! Plenty of movies are being released today, and you know I love to throw my personal predictions out there. What better way to kick off the weekend, right? So, what are we waiting for? Here we go!

Kung Fu Panda: Through this trailer you learn all about the different animal-based fighting styles, from Tiger to Monkey, and even Praying Mantis. When the get to the cute little panda for his demonstration, he’s busy chowing down! Not too much has been released about the actual plot line, but I have heard that the “slacker” of the group will be its guiding force against harm. Jack Black voices the panda and there are plenty of big names: Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, and Angelina Jolie to name a few. Awesome bit of trivia: during a press junket for this film, Jack Black accidentally spilled the beans about Jolie’s pregnancy with twins. That officially ended months of speculation by entertainment media, but not the fascination with Jolie and Brad Pitt’s continuously growing family. Did that take away a little bit of publicity from the movie? Yeah, it kind of did.
Will It Bomb? We haven’t had a bona-fide children’s movie in a while, and we haven’t had a great animated feature either. Again, the kiddies need to get out, too! That clinches it as a Top 5-er, more than likely behind Sex and the City and a little Adam Sandler picture that I have yet to discuss.

Mongol (Limited Release): Nominated for an Oscar this past year in the Foreign Language category, this tells the story of the boy who would grow up to become Genghis Khan. The trailer does emphasize his difficult childhood and seems to focus quite a bit on the aspects of ambition and hunger for power. Yet it looks like this is attempting to showcase all of that without invoking the negative connotations of the historical figure. Break out your history books, folks!
Will It Bomb? The beautiful cinematography and storyline sold AMPAS, so it’s time for the rest of the world to see it. The first run is in Limited Release, but the history buffs will wait in line. This will make a nice chunk o’change.

Mother of Tears: The Third Mother (La Terza Madre)
(Limited Release): Dario Argento has long been dubbed the King of Italian horror, and it’s only fitting that horror fans who haven’t seen his work get the chance to do so. Starring his daughter, Asia Argento, and taking place in glorious Rome, an ancient coffin is dug up, and opened, releasing an evil witch that is bent on wreaking total destruction on anyone in her path.
Will It Bomb? I’m not too familiar with the mainstream popularity of Argento’s films, but I think this will appeal to those who really want a good scare and who don’t want anything rehashed and reheated. This is another limited release, but I don’t see why this won’t make money.

The Promotion (Limited Release): Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly (who I simply adore as Reed Rothchild in Boogie Nights) star as adorable, yet slightly dorky guys who duke it out for the same job. The concept sounds a bit cutthroat, but the job title has its perks! What’s the job? They’re competing for a higher-paying managerial position at their local supermarket. That’s not exactly what many would consider classically powerful, but the subtlety of the battle is key.
Will It Bomb? Since this is another film I haven’t heard anything about, I’ll go out on a limb and wager this will bring in a modest amount of earnings.

You Don’t Mess With the Zohan: Who isn’t happy that Adam Sandler has returned to the comedic genre that made him a household name? As Zohan, he is an extremely skilled and crafty Israeli fighter who can beat anybody. But he believes that his life needs a new direction, and hops a flight to America. Yeah, he does need a job, but what else could he be good at? Try to forget the master warrior, because it’s time to meet the master hairstylist.
Will It Bomb? Every single flick that has this trailer preceding it resulted in everyone erupting with laughter. This will probably hit #1 right off the bat, that is, if SATC can’t hold it at bay. In any case, the lowest it will hit is #2.

So, that’s going to be all for me this week, kids! Was I able to dig myself of out the hole of off predictions that I have sunk into before? Wait until early next week, when DIB? is in the house! As always, I’ll be re-capping which of these films soared and which ones completely tanked. So, be sure to check that out! Until then!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 5/30/08

Happy Friday! May is about to be a distant memory, but you can bet that the studios are breaking out the good stuff! What can you all look forward to this final week of the month? Hey, it’s time to find out! Here comes another edition of WIB?!

Sex and the City: Anyone who has ever been a fan of this show will be running so fast to see this! Four years have gone by since the series ended, and it looks like the ladies are going through even more life changes. Everyone is back, from the fabulous femmes, to their ultra-fashionable friends, husbands, children, and the best accessory of them all: New York City.
Will It Bomb? With a predominantly female audience, this will break into the second spot. Indiana Jones doesn’t look to be stepping down from its pedestal, but this will still break the bank. Who hasn’t been waiting for this movie to be made?

The Strangers: How many more movies with this same tired premise have to get made? Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman play a couple who take a little vacay at some isolated spot, when a bunch of people (who are probably psychotic, as they usually are in these films) hold them hostage and terrorize them. Am I supposed to be afraid? I’m pretty bored, actually. Even the music in the trailer and the masked mug in the corner didn’t do it.
Will It Bomb? I would not be surprised if it were to end up somewhere in the Top 5, but this will never match or surpass the ladies of SATC and old Mr. Jones. I think it’ll slide into the fourth or fifth spot.

It looks like that’s going to be all for me! You can bet that I will be back early in the week to give you the recap like nobody’s business. That happens, as always, over at DIB?. Have a great weekend and Happy Moviegoing!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 5/23/08

It’s Memorial Day weekend, already? Man, almost half of the year has flown by!

Well, guys, as we all know, any movie that’s released remotely near a holiday gets the biggest push from the studios! This week should be no exception. Many of you will have this Monday off, so you will have three days in which to spend quality time with your favorite film stars. So, welcome to this week’s WIB?! What’s up for grabs?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Harrison Ford once again dons the fedora and carries the whip in the fourth Indy film! This time, Indiana is back in commission and has to foil some Russians (including raven-bobbed Cate Blanchett) who are trying to figure out what’s so special about their new discovery. To add to the mix, Shia LaBeouf plays his new sidekick, and Karen Allen returns as our hero’s former flame. However, there may be something to boo at… no Sean Connery!
Will It Bomb? Oh, baby! This is a no-brainer. Prince Caspian is not only going to lose his figurative crown, but will be blown away by this film. Without a doubt, this will hit #1!

Postal (Limited Release): The director behind this, Uwe Boll, was also behind the ever-so-lame In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (which starred the seemingly suck-proof Jason Statham). Isn’t it kind of bad to be a director and have minimal success with your films? Just a thought, Anyway, this stars Zack Ward (who most of us remember as the kid that gets beaten up by Ralphie in A Christmas Story) as a guy who has to save the masses from the Taliban, with help from his cult-leader uncle (Dave Foley). A tad over-the-top, I’d say.
Will It Bomb? Absolutely. I don’t doubt that for a minute. Even in its Limited capacity, it doesn’t have a chance.

The Children of Huang Shi (Limited Release)
: Jonathan Rhys Meyers starts a as journalist who heads to China in the late 1930s. On the brink of World War II, he encounters a group of orphaned boys and takes them under his wing. That’s not all. It looks like he makes it a point to help them escape from the area, despite the environment. From what I have read, this is based on a true story and much of the film was shot in the beautiful country.
Will It Bomb? This is another movie I’ve barely heard anything about. However, I believe that while this is only being shown in New York and Los Angeles, it looks like it’ll earn a decent take this first round.

That’s going to be all for this week, folks. So far, my success rate is becoming steady, so let’s see if I will stay on that track. Better there than back at square one! Already anxious to find out how this plays out? Don’t forget about the official recap, which you can find over at DIB?! That returns, as always, early next week. Have a wonderful Memorial Day and Happy Viewing!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 5/16/08

This week’s new film releases are about to drop and, as always, I’m here to give you the details about which are going to climb the ranks, and which ones won’t even leave the gate! Welcome to another edition of WIB? So, what are we waiting for? It’s time to get started!

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Pevensie kids head back to Narnia in this adaptation of the next book in the series by C.S. Lewis. In their world, it’s only been a year since they were there. In Narnia years, it’s been around 1300. After seeing the country in complete ruins, you can tell that they are shocked at the condition it’s now in. In order to get the true ruler onto his throne, they are going to need to join in the country’s battle, which may go into all-out war.
Will It Bomb? This will absolutely jet past Vegas and Speed Racer, and I am definitely confident that it will get into the #2 spot. Iron Man will probably stay at the top for another week.

Reprise (Limited Release): Two friends in Norway are ready to take on the world and it all gets started when they mail off their manuscripts. Sounds like the beginning of a healthy competition. The question is: what awaits them? Judging by the trailer, one achieves a monumental level of success, and the other one is still struggling. You can obviously tell that there will be quite a toll on both their emotional well-being.
Will It Bomb? This has been hitting the festival circuit, and now that it’s in Limited Release it may make a nice amount of change. I haven’t really heard too much about it, however. Everything will depend on how much traffic this film gets in its first run. Let’s see what happens…

That’s going to be all for this week! Hopefully, my predictions will fare a lot better than last week! Once the weekend scores are in, you know that I will back to tell you all about them. All that and more at DIB? early next week! Have a great weekend!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 5/9/08

Hello everyone! Well, the weather up here in New England is crazy, as usual. The constant changes in temperature around here are par for the course, but I know what many of you are thinking of doing this weekend! The cinemas are calling to you! As always, you’ve got lots of choices, but which ones will give you more bang for your buck?

Check out the latest edition of WIB?! Here we go!

Redbelt: This isn’t some lowbrow action flick with nothing but fight scenes for the entire time! David Mamet directs this drama about a mixed martial arts fighter who is dealing with many issues. Costarring Tim Allen and Joe Mantegna, among the oodles of subplot, you have financial issues, a rigged competition, a woman searching for self-confidence, and even a has-been actor trying to make it big again. What a mouthful!
Will It Bomb? I haven’t heard a lot of buzz about this, considering the industry is focused on Iron Man (and rightly so), so I doubt it will get into the 10, but it should make a decent amount.

Speed Racer: How do you top The Matrix? The Wachowskis have returned with their take on a cartoon classic. Do you know what it is? I don’t think I need to tell you too much about it, since the trailer pretty much gives it to you. In yet another remake, Emile Hirsch plays our racing hero living in his high-octane, neon-colored world, where giving up his dream isn’t an option. Losing isn’t one, either! The supporting cast is very solid: Matthew Fox, John Goodman, Christina Ricci, and one of cinema’s grand dames, Susan Sarandon.
Will It Bomb? There is no way on earth that this will overtake the #1 film. It’s just not happening. Still, this will probably get into at least the low, low section of the 5.

What Happens in Vegas
: As everybody pretty much knows, Las Vegas is o the place where people go to leave their lives behind, whether they’re mundane, cluttered, or just plain lousy. That’s the case for Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. They each suffer some hardships and take a mini vacay to renew themselves. Only, as history has shown, Vegas + drunkness = marriage. Obviously they want to break up, but something will temporarily keep them together: a $3 million jackpot! Through a judge’s ruling forcing them to stay married, both sabotage each other’s lives and comfort for the dough. But, are they really into each other?
Will It Bomb? I’ll say it again! Iron Man is way too hot, so I think this will simply slide into the middle of the 10.

That’ll do it for this installment, friends! Now, my last two columns have resulted in perfect predictions, so can I make it a third? Cross your fingers, toes, and eyes that it will! So, be sure to come back early next week for the official recap over at DIB? I will see you all then!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 5/2/08

Happy Friday, everyone! Last week I managed to achieve what I haven’t been able to in quite a while: a perfect track record with my assessments. Was this just a lucky break? Can I pull it off two weeks in a row? I hope so!

Welcome to the first edition of WIB? for the glorious month of May! It’s time to check out the new releases!

Iron Man: Comic book movies are always rather gamey, but when you use the classic tune by Black Sabbath as a backdrop for the trailer, you know it’s going to be badass! Mogul Robert Downey, Jr. looked death directly in the face and survived, but when he’s detained and forced to build a weapon of mass destruction, he takes the initiative and makes a suit of armor instead. Would you want that coming at you? Costarring a slew of actors we haven’t seen for a while (Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges), I can already tell that this will be overflowing with action!
Will It Bomb? Everybody’s been waiting for this one! I can’t contain myself! This will undoubtedly infiltrate the Top 5! Fan boys and girls will make this hit #1!

Made of Honor: I remember when Patrick Dempsey played lovable yet, geeky guys in those 80s movies. Obviously, we know he’s outgrown all that and has become an actor that’s quite in demand. However, it looks like he’s returning to familiar terrain in this film. His relationship with longtime platonic gal pal (Michelle Monaghan) has weathered their ups and down of the dating scene. But life is going to get all snagged when she trots on over to Scotland for work and returns engaged! Now, as the maid of honor (get the obvious pun?), Patrick has realized he’s been in love with her all along and may need to let the cat out of the bag! As I’ve heard this pointed out, isn’t this just an male version of My Best Friend’s Wedding?
Will It Bomb? Although we all know this plot has been redone time and time again, I don’t think this is completely down for the count. Dempsey is pretty hot right now! I think this will forge into at the least the Center of the 10, with a possible plop into the Top 5.

Son of Rambow
(Limited Release): Way back in the 80s, two British boys become friends under interesting circumstances. One of them is a member of a fairly strict religion and the other is a budding filmmaker. When they decide to make their own sequel to the Rambo series, they become the envy of the teen community! Of course, it’s their strong friendship that everyone else should be envious of, as well as those killer ideas for the film!
Will It Bomb? I’m definitely pulling for this! It looks really cute! While it’s only in Limited Release at this time, this should turn a healthy profit. Let’s see how it does.

All righty then, my friends! That’s going to do it for me. I’m already anxious to see those results, and I know that I can’t wait until they come back. So, as always, I will return early next week with the full report over at Did It Bomb?! Have a great weekend and Happy Viewing!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 4/25/08

The weekend has arrived! I know that all of you are jonesing for what I’m about to talk about! What’s coming out at the cinema this week? Oh, my friends, stuff is definitely cooking and the kettle is ready to boil over!

Onto this week’s edition of WIB?! Let’s roll!

Baby Mama: When a single career woman (Tina Fey) hears her biological clock ticking really loudly, she jumps on the baby bandwagon, until she learns she cannot get pregnant naturally. In comes the surrogate mother (Amy Poehler), who acts more like the kid that’s soon to be born! Yep, they bond during the whole process, all right!
Will It Bomb? These two ladies are hysterical by themselves, but the combined wits of the former SNL-ers will absolutely send this into the Top 3. It’s going to be a free-for-all between this, Marshall, and Forbidden.

Deal (Limited Release): What the heck is going on with Burt Reynolds? Can he not find any great roles anymore? Here he plays a former professional poker player who latches on to the new kid on the block (Bret Harrison), as they try to earn some serious dough in Vegas. Just as you might guess, they end up taking each other on at the tournament finals! I’d like to point out at this time that there are way too many similarities to that awful movie with Eric Bana called Lucky You. .
Will It Bomb? This doesn’t have a chance! Poker and gambling movies are dicey. 21 managed to deliver a complex and compelling story, which make the money. Lucky You had a flat storyline, not-so-great acting, and thus, barely made a dime. Take it from experience, it won’t even break the 10 when it goes into Wide Release.

Deception: As a man recruited into a special underground club by Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor learns it’s all comprised of sex between strangers. When he begins seeing one of the female members (Michelle Williams) on the sly, and she goes missing, Ewan must break the rest of the rules to aid in the search. Only nothing and no one is what they seem! Hugh Jackman hasn’t really played too many evil roles, so I am quite thrilled that he heads on over to the dark side in this film!
Will It Bomb? I love a good suspense film, but due to last week’s holdovers and the other newbies, this will probably set up shop in the Low-to-Mid section of the Top 10.

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay: While the stoners and slackers have been considered almost endearing in some films, I can’t really comment on the appeal of these two. Kal Penn and John Cho reprise their roles here. After attempting to smuggle some drug paraphernalia on a flight to The Netherlands, they accused of being involved in terrorist activity and are sent to a prison on a U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Naturally, the whole point of the movie is how they are going to break out of there!
Will It Bomb? I don’t see why not! It’s the sequel to the popular flick and a bunch of the characters from the original are on board! This will get into the 5, no doubt in my mind!

All right, folks! There you have it! I will see you with the official recap early next week over at DIB?! Happy weekend and happy viewing!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 4/18/08

Good evening, everyone! The weekend is on its way, and I hope that you all will take the time and go see one of so many films that the studios have released! Only, are they worth your precious time and dough?

That’s right! It’s time for a brand-new installment of WIB?! How are the choices looking this weekend! Scroll down and see!

88 Minutes: After having given expert testimony at the trial that puts a ruthless killer on death row, somebody’s looking to get revenge on Al Pacino! True to form, he has to figure out who wants him dead, before it’s done. Naturally, he only has, what else, 88 minutes to do that. The crazy part is the hardened criminal that got put away actually seems happy that the tables have turned.
Will It Bomb? Guys, it’s Al Pacino! He could read the list of ingredients on a cereal box and it would still be considered brilliant! I think it will make the lower level of the 5, since the rest of them are getting a bit old and not-so-fresh.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall: How can you forget Sarah Marshall? When Jason Segel gets dumped by the aforementioned screen queen (Kristen Bell), he rolls on out to Hawaii to drown his sorrows. Only, guess who’s staying at the resort with her new squeeze? While being around the happy couple is making Segel uncomfortable, he makes new connections of his own. This just may be the ticket to overcome the heartbreak!
Will It Bomb? The marketing campaign has been rampant for this comedy, and while it may be a little excessive at this point, it will pay off! Produced by Judd Apatow and written by Segel, it’s a guaranteed success. This will positively dethrone Prom Night. It will make #1, and with a great big chunk of dough!

The Forbidden Kingdom: I am beyond thrilled that two men who are considered to be masters of the martial arts film genre have finally banded together! When a teenager gets transported to Ancient China, he seems pretty skeptical about possibly becoming an elite warrior. However, the two men who wish to become his master must put their own personal feelings aside, especially when one needs rescuing. I know that if I had to pick between Jet Li and Jackie Chan, I’d have quite a hard time!
Will It Bomb? I don’t know about you, but I’ve been waiting for a pair-up like this! While the storyline is geared more toward the tweens and teens, judging by those fight scenes in the trailer, it should bring in the greenbacks! I vote that it will get into the middle of the Top 10.

Pathology: I thought the medical students in Flatliners were pulling something pretty freaky! Milo Ventimiglia stars as a med student who’s in a rivalry with another. Yep, the two overachievers are trying to trump each other. What’s the catch? Somebody in their expanded social circle is a little obsessed with murder. So, what’s the whole point of these senseless killings? Is it to gather up cadavers for genuine medical research or just for kicks? Personally, I don’t want to know!
Will It Bomb? This week has very stiff competition, but for those who want to get the living daylights scared out of them, this is the way to go! I vote center of the 10.

Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? (Limited Release): I’ve always thought that Morgan Spurlock is pretty ballsy. What can you expect from a guy who ate nothing but McDonald’s for an 30 days? With this documentary film, the topics venture from attitudes toward terrorism and discussions with Muslims, as well as a trip to the Middle East in search of Bin Laden himself.
Will It Bomb? Spurlock has made quite a name for himself with his over-the-top documentaries, so I don’t see why this wouldn’t make a little dough!

Wow, we’ve got quite a variety! Those are my assessments, friends. Want to see if I can still maintain the level of success from last week? There’s only one way to find out! Stay tuned for the next edition of DIB?, which returns early next week. Happy viewing!

Will It Bomb? Weekend of 4/11/08

In the midst of all the nice weather that all us of here in New England have been waiting for, you can’t deny what is inevitable: New film releases! Seeing as I am the resident commentator and dirt-slinger when it comes to how these are looking, it’s time for me to put my talents to use! Yes, kids, you’ve stumbled upon another edition of WIB?! It’s so chock-full of goodies, I wish I had a straw and a spoon so I can get every last bit out!

Chaos Theory (Limited Release): For someone who leads a very organized, and in fact, an almost anal-retentive life, being forced to dump it may throw them for a loop. Ryan Reynolds plays a dude who doesn’t take many walks on the wild side. How could he if he’s so meticulous with his scheduling? The time has now come for him to throw caution to the wind and live like many people do, in a state of disorder!
Will It Bomb? I’m definitely interested in how this will play. I’m guessing that in its current limited release, this could see a decent take!

Prom Night: This should have been a baseball film, because it has so many strikes against it! All right, the biggest one is this is yet another remake of an old ‘80s shocker with a killer stalking his victims at the prom. The trailer did absolutely nothing for me. Something to ponder before going crazy at a formal dance…Didn’t anybody see Carrie? The character Sissy Spacek ingrained in our memories because of her horrific prom experience? Remember what she did?
Will It Bomb? It looks so far beyond stupid, but we all know that someone will probably see it. Again, I’ll probably underestimate the public, and I’m not looking forward to that. But, it has to end up in the lower end of the 10! I have no other thought.

Smart People: College professor Dennis Quaid has a bit of a setback when he is not permitted to drive for six months due to a seizure. While he is rather eccentric and off-the beaten path, we add the freeloading, screwed-up adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church), subtly wacky doctor/potential love interest (Sarah Jessica Parker), and super-conservative, overachieving daughter (Ellen Page) and you have one piping hot bowl of dysfunction. Oh yeah, and it’s a comedy!
Will It Bomb? Quaid’s newsworthiness these last few months were due to his infant twins’ hospitalization, so now that the kids are fine, it’s nice to shift the focus, don’t you think? The casting is stellar, so that alone should send it into the center of the 10.

Street Kings: Finally, a Keanu Reeves movie that I’m actually excited about! Reeves stars as an LA cop going after the criminals in ways that the police academy didn’t teach them. This looks like there’s loads of corruption, illegal tactics, and somebody’s just on a big, old power trip! The supporting cast features some popular TV stars, rappers, and comedians. They’re all coming out of the woodwork!
Will It Bomb? I’m already pumped! It looks totally action-packed and that’s what we need right now! It’s going in the Top 5, no question!

Keep your fingers crossed that I’ve managed to pull a 180 this time around! Come on back early next week where over at DIB?, you’ll get all of the goods! Until then!

  Will It Bomb? 4/4/08

It’s Friday, everybody! TGIF! Now it’s time to relax from the crazy goings-on all week, and possibly make a trip to the cinema! Even better, with Spring and Summer being my two favorite seasons, how stoked am I that the seasonal blockbusters are coming? So, with that being said, what have you got on the horizon this weekend? Will they rake it in, or take the loss?

Welcome to this week’s installment of WIB?! Here we go!

Leatherheads: Granted I like football, but combining it with those old screwball comedies? Interesting… Taking place in the 1920s, and starring George Clooney, John Krasinski, and Renee Zellweger, the movie shows a time when football as we now know it was in its infancy (the title refers to those spiffy caps worn back then). Two members of the squad are not only trying to help mold the sport, but end up falling for the same woman! Chuckles! Being in a film with these Hollywood heavyweights might be doing Krasinski some good! This could lead to quite a push for more big screen roles!
Will It Bomb? Considering that this is an attempted return to a genre that has been out of circulation for a long time, this may not get too much of good rap by the modern generation. If anything, this should get a nibble, but only enough to make either the #8 or #9 slot.

Nim’s Island: Two actors who are just forging into kid-friendly films star alongside a juvenile actress who could end up with a career just as stellar as her co-stars. Abigail Breslin stars as a girl who lives on an island with her scientist father (Gerard Butler). She spends her days yukking it up with him and her animal friends. Daddy then disappears, and then enter, Jodie Foster! Foster’s connection seems pretty vague in the trailer, but if I nose around for spoilers, I might find out some more juicy stuff!
Will It Bomb? While I hope that Butler and Foster go back into doing mature roles, it’s nice to see them branch out! This film is something for the children! That will absolutely bring this into the middle of the 10, and possibly edge into the Top 5! This will be the movie for that target market for the next couple of weeks!

Shine a Light: The Rolling Stones combined ages are probably at least close to, if not over, 250 years, but in my book, they still rock! Directed by Martin Scorsese, this showcases The Stones “A Bigger Bang” tour both on and off of the stage, and it looks like they rip it up harder and better every time they perform! They have more energy now than 30 years ago!
Will It Bomb? One of the world’s biggest directors and one of the world’s greatest bands? That’s definitely money in the bank. This has an extremely good chance of getting into the 10, thanks to the baby boomers and younger fans!

The Ruins: Spare me! For those of you who haven’t been around since the beginning of my stint with MovieSnobs, my first review was for a flick called Turistas. Does anyone remember that? I didn’t think so! This is a total rip-off of that crapfest, but instead of the jungles of Brazil, this takes place in the jungles of Mexico, specifically by a Mayan temple. Again, a bunch of dippy vacationing collegiates decide to wander from their comfortable surroundings to the scary “real world” where they run screaming for dear life. Bad move! To add even more insult to injury, I’ve only heard of one cast member: Jena Malone.
Will It Bomb? Absolutely! You couldn’t pay me enough money to go and see this dreck, and no one else will either! This will hit the rock bottom of the Top 10, if at all!

There you have it! All the dirt you need and want. Come on back early in the week for all the recaps you can handle over at DIB?! Have a great weekend!

  Will It Bomb? 3/28/08

Happy Thursday, kids! You all know what that means! The weekend is coming and so are new movies! We have a lot to go over, so let’s hit it! Welcome to this week’s WIB?!

Flawless: Michael Caine is a custodian at a London diamond exchange who teams up with a female employee who’s been passed over for many promotions, due to her gender. And to answer what I assume to be your most burning question…Yes, the two people everyone least suspects are planning to rob the diamond vault. Is the female lead a surprise to any of you? While it seems that she couldn’t quite keep a grasp on her British accent, welcome back, Demi Moore!
Will It Bomb? I doubt that it will do exceptionally well. There is way too much competition for this to make a major dent. If anything, it should make an appearance in the Lower end of the 10.

Run, Fatboy, Run: David Schwimmer (Yes, that David Schwimmer…the one who used to play Ross Geller) makes his directorial debut in this comedy. Years after fleeing from his bride (Thandie Newton) at the altar, Simon Pegg believes he made the world’s biggest gaffe (probably more-so since she’s now with Hank Azaria). So, to prove to her that he’s not the dip he once was, he decides to shape up and run in the London Marathon. Only, the trouble is, he has to actually get in shape. The shot of him in the spandex hotpants yanking out a wedgie? Priceless!
Will It Bomb? Simon Pegg is definitely one of the new Crown Princes of BritCom (along with his constant sidekick, Nick Frost), and if this is even half as funny as Hot Fuzz, it will make the Top 10. I’m still hoping for a spot in the Top 5, though.

Superhero Movie: If you’re into those ubiquitous movies that take every recent film in a single genre to create an over the top parody, you’re in luck! They made another one! What’s this one about? Read the title! Mostly a knockoff of Spider-Man, this stars Drake Bell (from Nickelodeon’s Drake& Josh) as a super klutzy teenager by day, klutzy, bumbling superhero by night. I’m not feeling it…
Will It Bomb? I may not be into it, but this will probably make the middle of the Top 10, with a strong chance of creeping into the 5. The masses seem to really like the parodies!

Stop Loss: I have seen Kimberly Peirce’s poignant Boys Don’t Cry a few times, and it’s one of those films that gets me choked up whenever I see it. Peirce directed Hilary Swank in the first of her two roles to earn Oscar gold, but can lightning strike twice with this film? Ryan Phillippe stars as a veteran just about to wind up his stint in Iraq, when the government chooses to send him back over. Needless to say, Ryan thinks he’s done his duty and it’s time for the military to relieve him, but conflict all across the board has everyone around him thinking…
Will It Bomb? With the war being a constantly touchy subject, I think this has a decent chance of slipping into the 10, but I think more exposure over time will earn this viewership.

21: The tons of publicity surrounding this movie had better guarantee a knock out of the park, since it’s all I’ve been reading about. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess, and Kate Bosworth star in this movie, based on the true story of MIT students who put their brains to a different use, through gambling. Actually, to be precise, they were card-counting in Vegas. Well, we know that one of them had a pretty good reason for doing it: he needed money for school!
Will It Bomb? This will end up at either #1 or #2, just on the endless hype alone. I think it’ll either cause Horton to take a slight dip, or it’ll ride shotgun. The local connection to our neck of the woods might propel it a bit around here, as well!

That’s going to be all for me, friends! After the Box Office scores are in, you know I’ll be back with the results! Get ready, because come early next week, you get the latest installment of DIB?! Happy viewing!

  Will It Bomb? 3/21/08

Happy Thursday, everybody! As always, the new releases are unleashed on the world tomorrow, so it’s time to talk a little bit about them! Are they worth the money? Are they worth your time? I’m ready to tell you!

Welcome to an ever-so-informative installment of WIB?! Let’s get started!

Drillbit Taylor: With Seth Rogen co-writing the screenplay and Owen Wilson being front and center, moviegoers might not know what hit them! Three high school kids are desperate to hire a bodyguard for protection against the cool kids. The man they end up hiring poses as a teacher as well to impress a lady!
Will It Bomb? While the recent publicity has been less than flattering, I don’t see why this would completely tank. I’m thinking it’ll get at least the center of the Top 10, with a possibility of hitting #5.

Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns: Oh, Angela Bassett, I miss those days when your roles were nice and meaty… You played Tina Turner, for pete’s sake! In yet another adaptation of a Tyler Perry play, Bassett plays a single mom who learns of the death of the father she never knew and trots on down to Georgia to meet the rest of the family. Expect an appearance by Perry as Madea, as well as former Boston Celtic Rick Fox in a supporting role!
Will It Bomb? It seems that Perry’s films have the golden touch, so let’s just say that this one will as well, if only for just one weekend. It will land in the Top 5; I can feel it.
