Did It Bomb? Weekend of 11/23/07

All right, guys! Thanksgiving is gone. No more turkey or stuffing to fill your tummy, unless you have lots of leftovers! Well, hopefully many of you got your fill and made a trip to the cinema this past weekend!

As always, I made my personal predictions last week over at WIB? as to how the holiday weekend would stack up. Did I get it right or was I dead wrong? Welcome to this week’s edition of DIB?!

Off we go!

August Rush: Two musical parents have to give up their only child, and that kid tries to find them years later, using his own talents.
Will It Bomb? Heartwarming and dramatic at the same time, I think this will get a spot in the middle of the 10, most likely at #7 or # 8.
Did It Bomb? $13.3 million, and a #7 position. Right on the money!
Outcome: Score! 1 out of 6

Enchanted: Disney characters become human beings and go to the grittiest city I can think of - New York!
Will It Bomb? Hey, we need a comedy that appeals to everybody! We already have one film that the small kids like and one that the big kids like. It’ll probably surpass the current #4 and # 5 placeholders.
Did It Bomb? Not exactly! I definitely underestimated the power of this film. It did overpower # 4 and #5, all right. It hit #1 and raked in $50 million!
Outcome: Mezza-mezza. 1 ½ out of 6

Hitman: “Ave Maria,” an assassin, and really bad-ass action scenes are staples for this film based on the popular video game.
Will It Bomb? Beowulf and this will be duking it out for the Top 2 spots!
Did It Bomb? I thought that this would be a blockbuster! Man! I am completely baffled and rather bummed out! It didn’t make in the Top 2, but it did bring in $21 mill, and landed at #4, right under Beowulf. So, those two did have their battle for the higher spot, after all.
Outcome: Mezza-mezza. 2 out of 6.

I’m Not There: Bob Dylan, in different incarnations, and played by 6 different actors. Talk about variety!
Will It Bomb? Critical acclaim and possible major awards will override financial success, I think. This will probably land in the center of the 10.
Did It Bomb? $1 million from approximately 130 screenings? Not bad at all! Let’s hold over this one, shall we?
Outcome: To be continued… 2 out of 6.

The Mist: Flicks based on Stephen King books always deliver. That’s just the way it is. Small town folk are trapped in a building that is encased by some kind of mist. Is that mist of supernatural origin or not?
Will It Bomb? With a couple of flicks dwindling and the high success rate of films adapted from King works, this will hit the Top 10, probably in the #3 slot.
Did It Bomb? This came it at #9? It only made $13 million? A film based on a Stephen King book? This is getting really depressing, guys.
Outcome: Strike! 2 out of 6.

This Christmas: Another boring movie where everyone is interfering with everyone else’s lives, and Mom is clueless.
Will It Bomb? Snorefest! Nothing even close to originality here. It will tank!
Did It Bomb? What?! This hit #2? It made $27.1 million? OK, I was upset before, but this just clinched it!
Outcome: Strike! 2 out of 6.

While I slowly pull myself together from that double whammy, let’s take a peek at how Southland Tales has been doing, shall we? While I personally didn’t care much for the film both before and after I saw it, it looks like with a standing at #45, and a current grand total at a smidge over $227,000, not too many people were into it either.

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and The Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

Wow, this has to be an all-time low for me! Well, you can’t win them all! That’s going to be it for me this week, friends. I’m keeping my chin up, though! I’m hoping that my assessments in the upcoming editions of both DIB? and WIB? will help me bounce back! Be sure to check back in!

I’m as surprised as you are by the “Hitman” debacle. I’m still going to see it damned it!
