Did It Bomb? Weekend of 1/18/08

All right, guys! For those of you who checked out last week’s WIB?, you’ll notice that, for some pretty good reasons, I dubbed it the Money Hungry Edition. All those flicks revolving around stealing dollars and making dollars… Money, money, money! Well, now, did those flicks bring in the kind of cash that I expected them to? Was the burning hunger for big bucks quelled? It’s time to find out!

Welcome to this week’s DIB?!

Cloverfield: Who has not heard or read anything about this film in the last 6 months or so? That’s how long they’ve been running this unbelievable marketing campaign! A vicious “thing” has been running rampant through NYC and destroying everything in its path. I’ve been wondering if this was just going to be something like Godzilla (which we’ve seen repeatedly). That would not make me happy!
Will It Bomb? It’s going to premiere at the very, very top of the list and will blow away all the others and simply rake it in! Mark my words!
Did It Bomb? I was right on the button, my friends! It debuted at #1 and raked in an impressive $41 million!!!
Outcome: Score! 1 out of 4.

Cassandra’s Dream (Limited Release): Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell play brothers in this Woody Allen flick, where family ties and money don’t mix. No, this isn’t exactly the tale of the Corleones, but there may be a nice tie to the mythological story of Cassandra and her prophetic nature when it came to her kin.
Will It Bomb? Although it’s in Limited Release, this will bring in a nice sum of money. Woody Allen directing should propel it as well!
Did It Bomb? Bringing in around $400,000 in over 100 theaters, this definitely has some potential! I’m holding this over for a little bit!
Outcome: To be continued…

Mad Money: In this comedy, Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, and Katie Holmes play employees of the Federal Reserve who plot to steal a nice chunk of change. Is anyone going to be onto their ploy? Does anyone really care? It’s debatable…
Will It Bomb? Mrs. Cruise has gone back to being just another actor in the bunch, so that just may bring out the masses to see what she and these other ladies have been up to. The storyline is certainly lackluster and refurbished, and Latifah and Diane have done better, but I think it’ll end up in the middle or lower end of the Top 10.
Did It Bomb? This should have been a gambling movie, because it ended up with a trio of 7s. Either way, my prediction about this was correct as well. $7.7 million earned and a # 7 position. I figured no one would go mad for it.
Outcome: Score! 2 out of 4.

27 Dresses: Katherine Heigl, how everyone loves you! As the breakout in both her prior film role as a pregnant woman and her current role on her hit television show, she’s got quite a following. To top it off, she’s recently married! This is a good part, then! As the Queen of Bridesmaids, she has been in a ton of weddings. The next one she’s supposed to help plan though, she’s not so thrilled. I don’t think she likes the idea of the man she has the major hots for getting married to her own sister!
Will It Bomb? It’s going in the Top 5 for sure, based on the audience’s need for a nice romantic comedy and because Heigl is so beloved right now! But, it won’t make nearly as much as Cloverfield.
Did It Bomb? I did it again! I’m happy to report that this came in at #2, bringing $22.4 million along with it.
Outcome: Score! 3 out of 4.

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

Nice turnout, don’t you think? I’m pretty stoked! I will see you guys later on this week over at WIB? for all the new flicks ready for release this weekend. After that, this column will be back with all the results. I will see you all then!
