Did It Bomb? Weekend of 12/14/07

All right, ladies and germs! You read my assessments of what came out last weekend and you either flocked to the cinema in droves or chose to stay home and watch TV reruns! At any rate, how about we see just how these flicks did over the weekend?

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Another CGI remake of a classic, Borrring. This one stars Jason Lee as the guardian to three little singing creatures. I loved the cartoon, so I wasn’t really happy to hear that movie was made.
Will It Bomb?
Nice and fluffy cartoon remake will bring some money. I vote that it will get into the #6 spot or lower.
Did It Bomb? Wow! I was off way off base! This brought in $44.3 million, and entered at the #2 slot! Who would have thought?!
Outcome: Strike! 0 out of 5

I Am Legend: Loose lips on the ending from star Will Smith may not have gone very well, but how about the plot? That of a lone survivor of some huge viral plague? Now you’re talking! This looks very well done and I expect mega bank!
Will It Bomb? With a huge amount of glowing publicity, it’s going straight to the top!
Did It Bomb? I called it! That’s right! It did make it to #1! Bringing $77.2 million, no less!
Outcome: Score! 1 out 5.

Juno (Limited Release): Teenage pregnancy doesn’t usually get too many guffaws, but this one looks like it’s going to deliver quite a few!
Will It Bomb? Buzz galore! It’s got what it takes, so it’ll gather in some money!
Did It Bomb? It hasn’t made it into the Top 10 yet, but it secured $1.4 million dollars in just a few theaters. Talk about an up-and-comer! Let’s keep our eyes on this one. Outcome: To be continued…

The Kite Runner (Limited Release): A man returns to his a native Afghanistan to rescue the son of his boyhood friend. Bring 10 boxes of tissues, kids.
Will It Bomb? This has had loads of buzz, too! Chances are, it will rake it in also!
Did It Bomb? This one didn’t do that shabbily either. A bit over $450,900 made from just a few theaters. Very, very good! This is another one to hold over for a bit, though. Outcome: To be continued…

The Perfect Holiday: Not in this movie it isn’t! The entire concept of this is perfectly awful! Single mother seeks new guy and may have found him - stuffed into a Santa suit and working at the mall. Not my idea of a good plot line. Anyone else?
Will It Bomb? Looks rehashed, lackluster, and obnoxious. How much more of these “films” do we have to deal with? If it even gets into the Top 10, it will definitely be at the lower end.
Did It Bomb? It really wasn’t perfectly awful, but it didn’t make much of an impact either. This grossed $2.93 mill and reached the # 6 position.
Outcome: Score! 2 out of 5.

We have a couple of updates as well, my friends! Two films previously discussed have made it into the Top 10! Rejoice! After this weekend, Atonement has grossed $2.92, which sent it into the 9th slot. August Rush came in right behind it, with the #10 position, making a bit over $1.7 million this weekend alone and grossing a total of $28 million!

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

That’s going to do it for this week’s edition of DIB?! Slide on back here in a couple of days to find out what’s coming out over the weekend over at the one and only WIB?! More recaps and wrap-ups are to come early next week, as well. Until then!
