Did It Bomb? Weekend of 2/22/08

Greetings, kids! The Box Office totals for this weekend have arrived. Did I get it right this time or am I way off? Take a peek and find out in this week’s edition of DIB?!

Be Kind Rewind: How would you think a video store would save itself when an employee has erased the tapes with his own natural magnetism? Remake and re-shoot all the movies in the craziest manner you can think of!
Will It Bomb? Putting Jack Black and Mos Def together was a very good idea! I loved the trailer and the premise of the film, although I wished it was geared towards older audiences. It’ll hit the middle of the Top 10.
Did It Bomb? It did fairly well, friends. Making $4.1 million, this eased into the #7 spot.
Outcome: Mezza-mezza. ½ out of 4.

Charlie Bartlett: Intelligent, yet very unpopular student has been kicked out of multiple private schools. To gain popularity at public school, he becomes the kid that tries to solve everyone’s problems: as the school’s student psychiatrist.
Will It Bomb? With an overdone plot, I doubt that it will make much money, nor much of an impact.
Did It Bomb? In essence, yeah, it did. It landed at #14 and brought in very little: $1.8 million.
Outcome: Score! 1 ½ out of 4.

Vantage Point: Multiple points of view of an attempted Presidential assassination? Now that’s creative. I especially love the cast, which features many well-known faces, from past and present.
Will It Bomb? The marketing for this has been through the roof! I just know Jumper is about to be booted from the top!
Did It Bomb? I got this one right on the button! It did make it to #1, bringing with it a nice chunk of change: $24 million.
Outcome: Score! 2 ½ out of 4.

Witless Protection: Larry the Cable Guy is great when he teams up with his Blue Collar pals, that’s for sure. I’m not too pleased with his choice of film roles, though. Somehow playing a bumbling sheriff who has to protect a witness slated to testify in a super-important case isn’t much of a stretch theatrically.
Will It Bomb? Yes. Yes. Yes. I’ll shout it from every rooftop in New England! Dude, stick with what you know! Go back on tour!
Did It Bomb? And how! $2.2 million and a sad little drop into #13.
Outcome: Score! 3 ½ out of 4.

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

Now, that’s more like it! I teetered ever-so-slightly! That’s going to be all, guys. Come on back here later this week and to check out all the latest flicks that are on their way over at WIB?! I’ll see you then!
