I’ll start off by saying I’m not excited about either Grand Theft Auto IV or Iron Man. I only like violent video games if you’re killing aliens, zombies, or Nazis. And while Iron Man certainly looks cool, I’m not a fan of Robert Downey Jr. and I’m not familiar with the Iron Man history.
That aside, I think CNN’s assertion that GTA IV will impact Iron Man’s profits is absurd. They quote all kinds of stats on the video game market being on the upswing and how GTA is expected to make $400 million in the first week. But their only “evidence” that video games have affected movie openings in the past is,
Last year, with $170 million in launch day sales and $300 million in its first week, Halo 3 was blamed by some for the poor box office performance of The Heartbreak Kid, starring Ben Stiller.
Seriously? Halo 3 is the reason why a Ben Stiller movie failed at the box office? How about the fact that he’s not funny and can only play one character?
Any hardcore gamers out there want to back me up? You’d take two hours out of your prostitute-killing and car-stealing spree to go see a big budget superhero movie, right?

As someone who hasn’t even bought the game yet, I don’t think it’s going to prevent me from seeing the movie this weekend.
Unless I stop at Best Buy on my way home tonight..
