  Speed Confuses Science Students

Sandra Bullock driving the bus in SpeedA recent study at the University of Central Florida has shown that students are confused about physics because of what they see in movies. For example, students actually believed that the bus in Speed can jump the gap in the freeway. Or that, in theory at least, Superman can turn back time by flying around the Earth in the opposite direction of its natural rotation.

As ridiculous as it sounds, it spawned the most awesome college class I’ve ever heard of (and I took a class called Camp Culture that studied cult movies) - Physics in Movies. The teacher, Professor Costas J. Efthimiou, teaches students basic principles of physics using examples from movies.

Anyone else want to apply to UCF?
