Cloverfield on Blu-rayDespite having already come out on regular DVD weeks ago, the monster movie Cloverfield is now being released on Blu-ray. The same goes for There Will Be Blood.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think studios should get their act together and release the Blu-ray version at the same time they release the regular DVD version. I would have bought a Blu-ray version of Cloverfield, in fact I asked the kid at Best Buy where it was. But since I bought the regular version, thinking there wasn’t going to be a Blu-ray version, I’m not going to purchase the newly released Blu-ray version. There goes the extra $10 they would have made on the price of the Blu-ray disc.

Also out this week is the DVD version of The Andromeda Strain miniseries that aired last week, and that I failed to correctly schedule in my TiVo as a two-night event.

  Most Popular: May 2008

May was a good month for movie-goers with Iron Man, Sex and the City, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hitting theaters (ok, maybe not that last one). Here’s what was most popular here on MovieSnobs in the month of May.

  1. New Hitman Images - Much like the image of Ryan Gosling has drawn readers to the above post, the image of a bald, gun-toting Timothy Olyphant has drawn readers to this post from before the movie came out.
  2. 40 Hottest Women Over 40 - It’s no surprise that people are still flocking to Mike’s list of the top 40 hottest women over 40. With babes like Mariska Hargitay and Eva La Rue sprinkling the page, who wouldn’t want to read it?
  3. The Prestige - Explained - Our most popular post ever has dropped to number 4 this month as the discussion continues. The spoiler-filled post is a jumping point for the intense discussion that follows in the comments.
  4. Unofficial Cloverfield Soundtrack Available - Some fans are still looking for a Cloverfield soundtrack, even though one isn’t available. This post points to a listing of all the music played at Rob’s party in the movie.
  5. The Dark Knight Roller Coaster in the Works - With the debut of the new Dark Knight roller coaster this month, readers have been looking for any information about the design of the ride. Lucky for them, the first reviews are coming in.
  6. The Dark Knight Viral Marketing - Even though most of the marketing for The Dark Knight has gone decidedly mainstream (Dark Knight candy, anyone?), readers are still looking for the crazy viral marketing that has been promoting the movie for over a year.
  7. The Prestige Review - Mike’s in-depth explanation of The Prestige continues to drive people to read his five-star review of the movie.
  8. Iron Man Review - The first superhero movie of the summer was Iron Man and it was pretty awesome.
  9. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Runtime - Everyone wanted to know just how long the new Indy movie was - two hours and twenty-ish minutes, if you must know.

  Most Popular: April 2008

We’re getting into the superhero movie season this year. Iron Man just blew away the box office competition. The Dark Knight trailer and viral marketing program are burning up the internet. The Incredible Hulk comes out in about a month.

Last month’s most popular items have some old favorites (#1) and some new ones (#4). They are:

  1. The Prestige Explained - Mike’s detailed explanation of the mysterious movie The Prestige jumps back into the number one spot on our list as our readers debate with Mike over the twins/clones issue.
  2. New Hitman Images - People just can’t get enough of Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47. It must be the bald head.
  3. 40 Hottest Women Over 40 - Unsurprisingly, Mike’s list of the 40 hottest actresses, singers, and others over 40 made the list again. I’d like to think it’s the article, but it’s definitely the pictures of hot chicks.
  4. Leaked Joker Images - Some semi-spoilerish images of The Joker appeared online, but were quickly removed at the request of Warner Bros. And by request I mean threats of a ceast & desist.
  5. Unofficial Cloverfield Soundtrack Available - The April 22nd release of Cloverfield on DVD had people looking for the soundtrack, which is still unavailable. This listing of the songs from Rob’s party is the closest you’ll get.
  6. Snobbies Matches - After announcing the winners of the 2008 Snobbies Awards (our own movie awards), we offered voters the chance to see how many they matched up with on the Snobbies Matches page. If you voted, just enter your email address and you’ll see how your votes compare with the winners.
  7. Forgetting Sarah Marshall Review - Jason Segel’s directorial debut includes several nude scenes…starring Jason Segel. It also stars muppets, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Hawaii.
  8. D-Wars Sequel Already? - Inexplicably people are still looking for information about D-Wars, the really bad dragon movie from last year.
  9. The Dark Knight Viral Marketing - As The Joker kicked off his new scavenger hunt on April Fool’s Day, April was a hot month for Dark Knight news. Between bowling balls and Jokerized trailers, we almost forgot there was a new trailer in the works.
  10. The Prestige Review - In a nice bit of symmetry, The Prestige review closes our list, most likely thanks to traffic sent from the #1 item on our list.

Stay tuned this month for new reviews, more Dark Knight info, and Christine’s answer to Mike’s 40 Hottest Women Over 40 list.

Cloverfield on Blu-ray…Now You Tell Us

I went out and bought Cloverfield on DVD on April 22nd like a good little DVD-buyer, despite the fact that it wasn’t released on Blu-ray yet.

Of course, now Bloody Disgusting has the news of a June 3rd release date for the Blu-ray edition. Was this a clever ploy to get those of us that still purchase DVDs to double buy, or were they just not ready to release the Blu-ray because they’ve added tons of extra features to it?

  Cloverfield Hype Picking Back Up

The upcoming release of DVD of Cloverfield has the internet buzz picking up again. The Bad and the Ugly has a roundup of the information spreading on the DVD, and new stuff on the viral sites. There’s a new poster on one of the viral sites for a “missing man” named Teddy. Some seem to think this is hype not for the DVD, but for Cloverfield 2. We’ll see.

The DVD will be out April 22nd, and includes two alternate endings. Hopefully one of them will be less sucky than the theatrical version.

  Two-Face Toy Revealed

Yesterday, we saw pictures of the new Cloverfield monster toys, and today we’re getting a glimpse at the toys from The Dark Knight.

Superhero Hype has a peek at the new Harvey Dent/Two-Face character figure, which looks pretty badass if I do say so myself.

  Cloverfield Monster Toy Images

ComingSoon.net has some great pictures of the new Cloverfield toy. It’s pretty realistic-looking, with a bulging part of its head looking like it’s ready to drop little monsters on you. It looks like they set it up in a recreation of the movie set, complete with the severed head of the Statue of Liberty and a little Army tank.

  Cloverfield Sequel Confirmed?

A page has been added to IMDb for the untitled Cloverfield sequel everyone’s been talking about. There’s nothing on the page, but it can be found under Untitled Cloverfield Sequel (2009). Hopefully that means we’ll be hearing more info on the movie soon.

  Movie Themed Avatars

Movie Themed AvatarsI meant to write about this a month ago when I found it, but it got lost in a sea of Google Bookmarks.

RopeofSilicon has a collection of movie-themed avatars for you to download and use. My personal favorite is the NPH one from the poster for Harold and Kumar 2.

They also have ones with Heath Ledger as The Joker, Cloverfield, Star Trek, Sex and the City, and a ton more. Go get yours at RopeofSilicon.com.

Cloverfield Monster Being Shown in TV Spots

I just spotted a short Cloverfield TV ad that actually showed the monster. If I’m not mistaken, that’s the first time they’ve started showing the monster in promos. Maybe they want to prove to all the naysayers that the monster is, indeed, awesome.

Has anyone seen the same ad? Or an earlier version showing the monster?

UPDATE 02/04/08: The new spot is now up on YouTube. Check it out below.

  Most Popular: January 2008

2008 got off to a great start with the release of Cloverfield, but ended in tragedy with the death of Heath Ledger, an extremely talented young actor. It was a busy month for movie news, and a sad month for Hollywood. Here’s what was most popular on MovieSnobs for January 2008.

  1. The Third Annual Snobbies - Every year since we started the MovieSnobs we have held our own movie awards, voted on by our readers. The readers who vote for the most number of movies that win are eligible to win great prizes. This year the grand prize is free movies for an entire year. First prize is an 8 GB Apple iPod Touch.
  2. The Prestige Explained - Mike’s minute-by-minute explanation of The Prestige has our readers debating the entire plotline down to the last detail. Join the discussion if you’ve seen the movie.
  3. 40 Hottest Women Over 40 - Mike took a look at the lovely ladies of Hollywood that have passed their 40th birthday. The list includes Eva LaRue, Maria Bello, and Famke Janssen. Have one you’d like to add to the list? Tell Mike about it in the comments.
