Did It Bomb? Weekend of 12/28/07

Happy New Year, kids! It’s officially here! What better way to kick off this January with the results of my predictions from last week?! So, how did I fare, exactly? Want to find out?

Welcome to the first edition of DIB? for 2008!

The Bucket List (Limited Release): Camping out in the hospital, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman decide to make the most out of what time they think they have left. By compiling a list of things they still wish to accomplish, that gives them some much-needed motivation and the desire to still stay young at heart.
Will It Bomb? Strong casting choices, but it’s not as challenging, considering their reputations. Either way, it’s bringing in some dough.
Did It Bomb? With $589,000 made in less than 20 theaters, these guys have still got it! Let’s keep an eye on this flick for a little bit.
Outcome: Score! 1 out of 4

The Great Debaters:
Collegiates coached by Denzel Washington have the chance to prove themselves against Harvard, in this film. Produced by Oprah and directed by the star himself, it’s got some powerful backing!
Will It Bomb?
I think this will do better critically more than financially. While the time for pumping out the drama has arrived for awards season, I am not so sure that people will flock to see it. Mid-to-low end of the 10, more than likely.
Did It Bomb? $9.4 million made and it hasn’t earned a spot on the Top 10, at all. This was a dud for poor Denzel. Well, you win some and you lose some.
Outcome: Mezza-mezza. 1 ½ out of 4.

The Water Horse: The Legend of the Deep: Long story short: Kid finds egg. Egg hatches into a cute little thing called a water horse. Water horse gets deposited into a certain region in Scotland known for some paranormal occurrences. Give up? It’s the kiddie version of the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.
Will It Bomb? Marginal, in my eyes. This won’t acquire a gargantuan amount of success. However, the young ones need something new to occupy their time. I think it will go at the lower end of the 10.
Did It Bomb? It didn’t openly suck, but it wasn’t a phenomenal hit, either. My feelings proved true: this earned a little over $14 million, and set up shop in the #6 slot.
Outcome: Score! 2 ½ out of 4.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem: AVP was so bad, that I was beyond happy that I got to see it for free. You can guess that not only do I have no desire to see it, but I doubt that my fellow movie fiends will either. What, exactly, can you salvage from that piece of garbage? Squat, that’s what.
Will It Bomb? Bomb. Bomb. Bomb. It won’t even get out of the gate.
Did It Bomb? #7 position? $13.7 million revenue? Excuse me? Did I read that correctly? Someone actually went to see this? I’m in shock! Well, comparatively, it could have been worse, but I doubt it’s going to climb any higher.
Outcome: Mezza-mezza. 3 out of 4.

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

All right, my friends! Not a bad turnout for this week! Get ready to peek at an all-new installment of WIB? in a couple of days! I will get to start fresh and assess all the new flicks on the way, letting you know if they are worth your money and time! Until then!

  Will It Bomb? 12/28/07

What can I say, kids? It’s been a wild ride this past year, and it’s going to get even wilder this coming year! This is the final installment of WIB? for 2007 and we’ve seen plenty of spectacular, horrible, and marginal films come and go. So, what flicks have the studios chosen to be their last salute to this banner year? Scroll on down and take a look!

The Bucket List (Limited Release): Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson may look like a couple of old coots who are cooped up in the hospital, making the list of the things they want to do before they go off to another world. Once they break out of there, they decide to grab life by the lapels and shake it up, by doing the things that they put on that list! Plus, you get a bonus: Sean Hayes! Will It Bomb? Who doesn’t love these men? While this premise is bit hokey and little soft considering what kinds of performances we are used to seeing from them, it’ll bring in fairly decent amount of cash. Let’s see how they do.

The Great Debaters: Denzel Washington directed and starred and Oprah Winfrey produced?! That already screams “powerhouse”! As a debate teacher circa 1935, Washington motivates his team of collegiates to persevere against all odds. There are quite a number of battles to win, but it does pays off! They have the opportunity to compete against Harvard!
Will It Bomb? Critically, this will clean up. It’s still the time of year for the feel-good drama. Financially, I’m not as confident. I think it will set up shop somewhere in the mid-to-low end of the 10. That’s a nice, comfortable place, if you ask me.
