Indiana Jones The Adventure CollectionThis week’s new releases include two very well placed releases, one thriller that I’m bummed I missed in theaters, and two movies that are probably not worth watching, let alone buying.

Indiana Jones - The Adventure Collection is perfectly timed to get fans ready for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, while The Chronicles of Narnia Blu-ray release is just in time for the release of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

I’m quite looking forward to watching the Diane Lane thriller Untraceable, but I’m actually a little ashamed to have included Mad Money and The Great Debaters in this list.

Did It Bomb? Weekend of 1/18/08

All right, guys! For those of you who checked out last week’s WIB?, you’ll notice that, for some pretty good reasons, I dubbed it the Money Hungry Edition. All those flicks revolving around stealing dollars and making dollars… Money, money, money! Well, now, did those flicks bring in the kind of cash that I expected them to? Was the burning hunger for big bucks quelled? It’s time to find out!

Welcome to this week’s DIB?!

Cloverfield: Who has not heard or read anything about this film in the last 6 months or so? That’s how long they’ve been running this unbelievable marketing campaign! A vicious “thing” has been running rampant through NYC and destroying everything in its path. I’ve been wondering if this was just going to be something like Godzilla (which we’ve seen repeatedly). That would not make me happy!
Will It Bomb? It’s going to premiere at the very, very top of the list and will blow away all the others and simply rake it in! Mark my words!
Did It Bomb? I was right on the button, my friends! It debuted at #1 and raked in an impressive $41 million!!!
Outcome: Score! 1 out of 4.

  Will It Bomb? 1/18/08

Happy Friday, everybody! As always, it’s time to discuss this week’s new releases which will be hitting the cinemas! What’s worth you digging into your couch for change or breaking open your rainy day piggy bank? Scroll on down to find out! You’ve stumbled onto another jam-packed edition of the only column where you get the dirt on each new film with no bull, just brass.

You know, I’m seeing a pattern lately with films about people resorting to crime when they have money issues as well as some films that are guaranteed to bring in a ton of revenue, so I thought that this week’s column deserves a little special treatment. So, without further ado, let’s bring on WIB?: The Money Hungry Edition!

Cassandra’s Dream (Limited Release): Greek Mythology tells us about Cassandra, daughter of the royal house of Troy, who predicted the downfall of her family as they go to war. I see a connection in this tale of two brothers (Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor) who band together with family assistance to get out of a major financial situation. When their darling uncle Tom Wilkinson puts the squeeze on them, it’s do or die. Talk about tons of unraveling to fix this mess!
Will It Bomb? I’ve never been much of a Woody Allen fan, but I will admit that I am curious as to how this will go down. While CD is in Limited Release this week, I’m thinking it’ll bag a good chunk of dough.

Cloverfield: Please don’t tell me that the endless amount of hype for this film over the last few months is wasted and this ends up being some Godzilla knockoff! I will be pretty upset. In case you haven’t heard, in New York City, we’ve got lots of buildings going down by a mysterious something (or someone) and the witnesses are eager to find out what’s happening. JJ Abrams produced, so I would think he’s got something very interesting up his sleeve!
Will It Bomb? No way! This will be a piece of cake; a complete sweep! I expect this to debut at #1 and clean up the competition! Oh yeah, kids, it’s bringing in major, major cash. I have no doubt in my mind!

Mad Money: The cinematic return of Katie Holmes has thrust this film into the front line! Holmes, Queen Latifah, and Diane Keaton are back in the comedy biz as Federal Reserve employees who decide to make off with lots o’greenbacks. As if anyone wouldn’t notice! Do they have any thoughts about the consequences of their actions? It doesn’t look that way in this trailer!
Will It Bomb? Katie Holmes has been hitting the talk show circuit hardcore to promote this film. Since she’s been out of the limelight as an acting professional and all the focus has been on her personal life, the masses want to see if she’s still got the chops. While the plot is unquestionably rehashed, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this flick in the Low-to-Mid section of the 10.

27 Dresses: While Katherine Heigl is a recent newlywed, her character in this movie has been a bridesmaid in almost 30 weddings. So, she’s quite an expert on the subject, right? As you would think, she’s got a major dilemma! She’s in love with her sister’s fiancĂ©! Oh, the horror! Heigl is now America’s latest media sweetheart with her award-winning role on Grey’s Anatomy and for portrayal in the superhit Knocked Up. While we know she has skills amongst an ensemble cast, the true test will be if she can carry a film all by herself.
Will It Bomb? This won’t come close to what Cloverfield will make, but I vote it’ll get into the Top 5 for two reasons. It’s time for a new RomCom to hit the books and I doubt that Heigl will want to disappoint her current fanbase and the academies that bestowed those awards on her! It looks like she hit this one out of the park.

Whew! That’s going to do it for this week! I certainly hope that you’ve gotten some great ideas about your film choices! I’m looking forward to bringing you all the results early next week over at DIB?, let me tell you!

As if I couldn’t get enough, WIB? returns late next week! Have an awesome weekend!
