Did It Bomb? Weekend of 2/1/08

All right kids! Well, the Super Bowl didn’t turn out the way most of us New Englanders wanted it to, but c’est la vie!

So, how did the flicks do over at the box office this past weekend? Let’s take a look, shall we?

Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour: Mademoiselle Miley Cyrus breaks out her pipes and Hannah Montana wig to bring her concert tour to the big screen so more of her ever-so-devoted fans could enjoy it!
Will It Bomb? This is the most popular performer in the preteen circuit, so this will definitely end up somewhere in the Top 5!
Did It Bomb? Check that out! Apparently, everybody got the best of all worlds! This made it to #1, bringing in $31.1 million!!
Outcome: Score! 1 out of 4.

Over Her Dead Body: Desperate Housewives model vamp Eva Longoria Parker strikes out on her own in this film, as a spirit who isn’t too thrilled that her former flame may have gotten over her. Time to sabotage!!
Will It Bomb? You betcha. While the powers that be are trying to get her more acting exposure outside of the show, this role isn’t the ticket. I doubt that it will make it in, but if so, it’ll be on the Lower end of the 10.
Did It Bomb? You betcha. A wimpy take of $5.4 million. While all the TV spots are hailing the comedic ability of Mrs. Parker, not too many people were running for the door. Better luck next time.
Outcome: Score! 2 out of 4.

Strange Wilderness: Adam Sandler’s shining face and whacked out humor are but a mere presence in this film (his production company backed this one up). One of Sandler’s personal film sidekicks, as well as some familiar faces from recent hits, band together the sweep what’s left of their local wildlife television program and search for Bigfoot. I’m not making that up, folks!
Will It Bomb? I’m thinking it’ll be moderately successful. It’ll make it into the Low to Mid end of the 10, for a nice, refreshing comedic change.
Did It Bomb? With a $3.1 million take? Yeah, it bombed. Like it’s never bombed before! It didn’t grab as much attention as I would have liked it to, I guess.
Outcome: Strike! 2 out of 4.

The Eye: Jessica Alba pulls a Sarah Michelle Gellar and does her first remake of a Japanese thriller. Alba gets a corneal transplant, and while she regains her literal vision, she’s getting some other kinds as well. Creepy ones.
Will It Bomb? I can’t decide. You have the remake of a Japanese psychological thriller with an actress who’s trying to broaden her range in a genre that probably isn’t a good fit for her. Money will be earned, but I think the film will go into the Lower-to-Mid section of the 10
Did It Bomb? Shocker! Coming in at #2 and earning about $12.4 million, that’s not quite a good comparison to what top dog Hannah Montana brought in, but it’s pretty good.
Outcome: Strike! 2 out of 4.

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).

Well, kids! I called them right down the center, again! Can I do better the next time around? Wait until the newest edition of WIB? comes to call! That should be interesting, as always! See you then!

  Will It Bomb? 2/1/08

Happy Friday, everyone! This weekend may be a biggie in the sports world as our beloved Patriots take on the Giants at the Super Bowl, but it’s always a race to the top in Movie Land! That’s right, kids! Welcome to this week’s installment of WIB?!

Now, are the films that the studios are releasing this week up to snuff? Or are you better off staying home and flipping the channels?

Take a look!

The Eye: For once it’s not Sarah Michelle Gellar doing a Japanese remake! This time it’s Jessica Alba. Hey, somebody new! As a recipient of a corneal transplant, Alba gets her sight back, but also gets the kind of visions not many of us would care to see. Yep, it’s the scary and supernatural kind. Whoopee.
Will It Bomb? It’s debatable. While the remake game will always be in play, and the desire for another psychological shocker is apparent, I am not thrilled with the choice for the lead (we all know that SMG and Naomi Watts are the queens of this genre). However, I think that some revenue will come in. It’ll probably get in the mid-to-low end of the 10, shuffling along with Strange Wilderness (see below).
