  Will It Bomb? 12/28/07

What can I say, kids? It’s been a wild ride this past year, and it’s going to get even wilder this coming year! This is the final installment of WIB? for 2007 and we’ve seen plenty of spectacular, horrible, and marginal films come and go. So, what flicks have the studios chosen to be their last salute to this banner year? Scroll on down and take a look!

The Bucket List (Limited Release): Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson may look like a couple of old coots who are cooped up in the hospital, making the list of the things they want to do before they go off to another world. Once they break out of there, they decide to grab life by the lapels and shake it up, by doing the things that they put on that list! Plus, you get a bonus: Sean Hayes! Will It Bomb? Who doesn’t love these men? While this premise is bit hokey and little soft considering what kinds of performances we are used to seeing from them, it’ll bring in fairly decent amount of cash. Let’s see how they do.

The Great Debaters: Denzel Washington directed and starred and Oprah Winfrey produced?! That already screams “powerhouse”! As a debate teacher circa 1935, Washington motivates his team of collegiates to persevere against all odds. There are quite a number of battles to win, but it does pays off! They have the opportunity to compete against Harvard!
Will It Bomb? Critically, this will clean up. It’s still the time of year for the feel-good drama. Financially, I’m not as confident. I think it will set up shop somewhere in the mid-to-low end of the 10. That’s a nice, comfortable place, if you ask me.

The Water Horse: The Legend of the Deep: Well, a young boy finds an egg that hatches a very rare (and very cute) being known as a water horse. It’s getting a bit too big to stay in the house, so where to put it? Loch Ness, of course. Yep, the Loch Ness Monster, the stuff of legend, has been turned into a family friendly movie. OK…I’m not feeling this too much, people. This has a bit too much of the Eragon vibe, don’t you think?
Will It Bomb? It’s up in the air for me. I don’t think it will be that successful, but it’s something new for the kids. Low end of the 10.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem: I saw the horrendous mess that was Alien vs. Predator a few years back, so I have zero interest in this film, nor do I expect anyone else to. Although some effort was put into the trailer with the Christmas carols in the background and typical shot of the creatures battling against the humans, I don’t think that will be good enough. Sometimes if a concept gets soiled pretty badly, it takes an act of nature to correct it. I doubt this will be the case here.
Will It Bomb? Horrible, pointless movie. It will go nowhere. Point made.

That’s all for this year! Thank you to those who have followed this column since the beginning, as well as all of the newest readers! Don’t fret! I will be back next week with the premiere edition of WIB? for 2008! It will only get better, I promise! Here’s to a safe and happy New Year!
