Will It Bomb? Weekend of 6/6/08

It’s Friday, everybody! It’s also the beginning of a new month and summertime is almost upon us. Here in New England, where unpredictability seems to be standard, we are slated to experience some gorgeous warm weather! Whatever weather we have, rain or shine, it’s always a great day for a movie. As you will see very shortly, this week’s edition of WIB? is overstuffed! Plenty of movies are being released today, and you know I love to throw my personal predictions out there. What better way to kick off the weekend, right? So, what are we waiting for? Here we go!

Kung Fu Panda: Through this trailer you learn all about the different animal-based fighting styles, from Tiger to Monkey, and even Praying Mantis. When the get to the cute little panda for his demonstration, he’s busy chowing down! Not too much has been released about the actual plot line, but I have heard that the “slacker” of the group will be its guiding force against harm. Jack Black voices the panda and there are plenty of big names: Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, and Angelina Jolie to name a few. Awesome bit of trivia: during a press junket for this film, Jack Black accidentally spilled the beans about Jolie’s pregnancy with twins. That officially ended months of speculation by entertainment media, but not the fascination with Jolie and Brad Pitt’s continuously growing family. Did that take away a little bit of publicity from the movie? Yeah, it kind of did.
Will It Bomb? We haven’t had a bona-fide children’s movie in a while, and we haven’t had a great animated feature either. Again, the kiddies need to get out, too! That clinches it as a Top 5-er, more than likely behind Sex and the City and a little Adam Sandler picture that I have yet to discuss.

Mongol (Limited Release): Nominated for an Oscar this past year in the Foreign Language category, this tells the story of the boy who would grow up to become Genghis Khan. The trailer does emphasize his difficult childhood and seems to focus quite a bit on the aspects of ambition and hunger for power. Yet it looks like this is attempting to showcase all of that without invoking the negative connotations of the historical figure. Break out your history books, folks!
Will It Bomb? The beautiful cinematography and storyline sold AMPAS, so it’s time for the rest of the world to see it. The first run is in Limited Release, but the history buffs will wait in line. This will make a nice chunk o’change.

Mother of Tears: The Third Mother (La Terza Madre)
(Limited Release): Dario Argento has long been dubbed the King of Italian horror, and it’s only fitting that horror fans who haven’t seen his work get the chance to do so. Starring his daughter, Asia Argento, and taking place in glorious Rome, an ancient coffin is dug up, and opened, releasing an evil witch that is bent on wreaking total destruction on anyone in her path.
Will It Bomb? I’m not too familiar with the mainstream popularity of Argento’s films, but I think this will appeal to those who really want a good scare and who don’t want anything rehashed and reheated. This is another limited release, but I don’t see why this won’t make money.

The Promotion (Limited Release): Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly (who I simply adore as Reed Rothchild in Boogie Nights) star as adorable, yet slightly dorky guys who duke it out for the same job. The concept sounds a bit cutthroat, but the job title has its perks! What’s the job? They’re competing for a higher-paying managerial position at their local supermarket. That’s not exactly what many would consider classically powerful, but the subtlety of the battle is key.
Will It Bomb? Since this is another film I haven’t heard anything about, I’ll go out on a limb and wager this will bring in a modest amount of earnings.

You Don’t Mess With the Zohan: Who isn’t happy that Adam Sandler has returned to the comedic genre that made him a household name? As Zohan, he is an extremely skilled and crafty Israeli fighter who can beat anybody. But he believes that his life needs a new direction, and hops a flight to America. Yeah, he does need a job, but what else could he be good at? Try to forget the master warrior, because it’s time to meet the master hairstylist.
Will It Bomb? Every single flick that has this trailer preceding it resulted in everyone erupting with laughter. This will probably hit #1 right off the bat, that is, if SATC can’t hold it at bay. In any case, the lowest it will hit is #2.

So, that’s going to be all for me this week, kids! Was I able to dig myself of out the hole of off predictions that I have sunk into before? Wait until early next week, when DIB? is in the house! As always, I’ll be re-capping which of these films soared and which ones completely tanked. So, be sure to check that out! Until then!

Hello, people! This weekend flew by, didn’t it? We only had a couple of flicks come out over that time period, but let’s see how my predictions matched up, shall we?

Sex and the City: Our favorite New York gals are back for one last hurrah. Almost all of the stars of this massively popular series have returned! I don’t know about you, but I was more than eager to see what course their lives have taken.
Will It Bomb? The female demographic will get this into the #2, but I doubt that it will shut out Harrison Ford! It will make a large amount of dough, anyway.
Did It Bomb? Shocker! This went straight to #1, with a take $56.8 million. Sex definitely sells!
Outcome: Mezza-mezza. ½ out of 2.

The Strangers: Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler take their married selves for a little getaway and end up stalked and held against their will. Not one of these kind of movies again! Looks tremendously boring to me…
Will It Bomb? This will get into the Top 5, definitely. I don’t think it will come close financially to the real hits. I vote it will make it to the #5 or #4.
Did It Bomb? Surprisingly this made $21 million, and it was enough to land this in the #3 position!
Outcome: Mezza-mezza.
1 out of 2.

Well, what do you know? Stumped again! As I often say, if you fall off of the curb, pick yourself up and start anew! Hopefully, I’ll do much better when this weekend’s new flicks are rolled out! See you over at WIB? in a couple of days!

Happy Friday! May is about to be a distant memory, but you can bet that the studios are breaking out the good stuff! What can you all look forward to this final week of the month? Hey, it’s time to find out! Here comes another edition of WIB?!

Sex and the City: Anyone who has ever been a fan of this show will be running so fast to see this! Four years have gone by since the series ended, and it looks like the ladies are going through even more life changes. Everyone is back, from the fabulous femmes, to their ultra-fashionable friends, husbands, children, and the best accessory of them all: New York City.
Will It Bomb? With a predominantly female audience, this will break into the second spot. Indiana Jones doesn’t look to be stepping down from its pedestal, but this will still break the bank. Who hasn’t been waiting for this movie to be made?

The Strangers: How many more movies with this same tired premise have to get made? Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman play a couple who take a little vacay at some isolated spot, when a bunch of people (who are probably psychotic, as they usually are in these films) hold them hostage and terrorize them. Am I supposed to be afraid? I’m pretty bored, actually. Even the music in the trailer and the masked mug in the corner didn’t do it.
Will It Bomb? I would not be surprised if it were to end up somewhere in the Top 5, but this will never match or surpass the ladies of SATC and old Mr. Jones. I think it’ll slide into the fourth or fifth spot.

It looks like that’s going to be all for me! You can bet that I will be back early in the week to give you the recap like nobody’s business. That happens, as always, over at DIB?. Have a great weekend and Happy Moviegoing!

Happy Tuesday, folks! Well, I got my fill of BBQ this Memorial Day…How about you? I’m surprised that my friends didn’t have to roll me out of my seat!

Before I get to our recap of how the Box Office fared, I did want to mention the loss of one of the industry’s most respected directors. Earning several Oscars over the course of his career and having gained a wide fan base, Sydney Pollack made quite an impact in film. Known predominantly for his directing, Pollack also acted occasionally, and I particularly loved his recurring role on Will & Grace. The film world has lost another great visionary, and he will be missed. Onto the results…

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Harrison Ford’s hair may have a little more gray, and he may have aged, but he can still kick ass! Indiana Jones has returned and is still fending off those pesky foes, all while cracking his whip and wearing the trusty fedora! While a group of Russians are investigating their new find, Indy has to fight them off! Cate Blanchett portrays the antagonist, complete with black tresses and a smooth Russian accent; Karen Allen is back as his ex; Shia LaBeouf fills in as the new sidekick.
Will It Bomb? Prepare yourself! This will definitely hit the top spot and it will make a ton of dough. That’s a given!
Did It Bomb? As the entire population expected, this made a phenomenal take! Including the holiday, it pulled in $151 million and naturally hit #1!
Outcome: Score! 1 out 3.

Postal (Limited Release): I thought that In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale would do very poorly when it was released, and it did. Now, director Uwe Boll has returned with this flick about some guy who has to fight against the Taliban and do a whole bunch of crazy stuff.
Will It Bomb? Forget about it. This will probably keep up Boll’s hellacious streak of pathetically bad movies. It’s in Limited Release on top of that.
Did It Bomb? As of today, the tally on this film has not been released, so I will need to hold this one over. I’ll keep you all posted! Har-har, “posted”.
Outcome: To be continued…

The Children of Huang Shi (Limited Release): Based on a true story, British journalist Jonathan Rhys Meyers has gone to China right before the second World War. When he meets a group of orphans and mentors them, he really puts his life on the line to get them out of their surroundings, before the trouble really starts.
Will It Bomb? Yep, this is also in Limited Release, but it looks like this will bring in a nice amount of cash.
Did It Bomb?
With showings in 7 theatres in only Los Angeles and New York, this earned a tad over $54,250. Super!
Outcome: Score! 2 out of 3.
***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (, The Hollywood Reporter ( and The Internet Movie Database (

There you have it! Two out of three, kids! Of course, there are always more films about to be released. Can I still keep up the momentum? Come on back later this week, where I will tell you all about them! Get ready for WIB?!

It’s Memorial Day weekend, already? Man, almost half of the year has flown by!

Well, guys, as we all know, any movie that’s released remotely near a holiday gets the biggest push from the studios! This week should be no exception. Many of you will have this Monday off, so you will have three days in which to spend quality time with your favorite film stars. So, welcome to this week’s WIB?! What’s up for grabs?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Harrison Ford once again dons the fedora and carries the whip in the fourth Indy film! This time, Indiana is back in commission and has to foil some Russians (including raven-bobbed Cate Blanchett) who are trying to figure out what’s so special about their new discovery. To add to the mix, Shia LaBeouf plays his new sidekick, and Karen Allen returns as our hero’s former flame. However, there may be something to boo at… no Sean Connery!
Will It Bomb? Oh, baby! This is a no-brainer. Prince Caspian is not only going to lose his figurative crown, but will be blown away by this film. Without a doubt, this will hit #1!

Postal (Limited Release): The director behind this, Uwe Boll, was also behind the ever-so-lame In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (which starred the seemingly suck-proof Jason Statham). Isn’t it kind of bad to be a director and have minimal success with your films? Just a thought, Anyway, this stars Zack Ward (who most of us remember as the kid that gets beaten up by Ralphie in A Christmas Story) as a guy who has to save the masses from the Taliban, with help from his cult-leader uncle (Dave Foley). A tad over-the-top, I’d say.
Will It Bomb? Absolutely. I don’t doubt that for a minute. Even in its Limited capacity, it doesn’t have a chance.

The Children of Huang Shi (Limited Release)
: Jonathan Rhys Meyers starts a as journalist who heads to China in the late 1930s. On the brink of World War II, he encounters a group of orphaned boys and takes them under his wing. That’s not all. It looks like he makes it a point to help them escape from the area, despite the environment. From what I have read, this is based on a true story and much of the film was shot in the beautiful country.
Will It Bomb? This is another movie I’ve barely heard anything about. However, I believe that while this is only being shown in New York and Los Angeles, it looks like it’ll earn a decent take this first round.

That’s going to be all for this week, folks. So far, my success rate is becoming steady, so let’s see if I will stay on that track. Better there than back at square one! Already anxious to find out how this plays out? Don’t forget about the official recap, which you can find over at DIB?! That returns, as always, early next week. Have a wonderful Memorial Day and Happy Viewing!

Well, folks… Another weekend has sailed on by! How did these films perform at the Box Office? How close did my predictions come? It’s now time for all of you to find out!

Welcome to this week’s installment of DIB?!

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The next novel in the Narnia series truly gets the royal treatment, as the Pevensies return to their beloved land to see that much as changed. Damaged terrain, possible full-scale war, and a prince that desperately needs to be in charge!
Will It Bomb? The films currently occupying the second and third spots are absolutely going down! As for our #1, I don’t think this will quite touch it.
Did It Bomb? Well, it climbed up the charts, all right! See you later, Speed! Arrivederci, Vegas! Bye-Bye, Iron Man? All three of these films dipped in the charts! This went all the way to the #1 spot, with a $56.6 million take!
Outcome: Mezza-Mezza. ½ out of 2.

Reprise (Limited Release): In this Norwegian film, two buddies rev up their friendly rivalry when they submit the manuscripts they’ve been working on for quite a while. As you can expect, one does well, the other, not so much. Struggles in life, career, and romance will certainly throw them for a loop!
Will It Bomb? The film festivals are really digging it, so with this limited jaunt, it could be in the cards for it to earn some bank.
Did It Bomb? With just 3 showings in NY and LA, this garnished over $45,400! Excellent! I think this should fare even better when it is expanded to additional markets!
Outcome: Score! 1 ½ out of 2.

OK, people. I am slowly, slowly getting there. I haven’t arrived yet, but I am as determined as ever! Where will I be later on this week? Why, here, of course! All the juicy details on the newest crop of flicks are coming at you in a few days! Get ready for WIB?!

This week’s new film releases are about to drop and, as always, I’m here to give you the details about which are going to climb the ranks, and which ones won’t even leave the gate! Welcome to another edition of WIB? So, what are we waiting for? It’s time to get started!

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: The Pevensie kids head back to Narnia in this adaptation of the next book in the series by C.S. Lewis. In their world, it’s only been a year since they were there. In Narnia years, it’s been around 1300. After seeing the country in complete ruins, you can tell that they are shocked at the condition it’s now in. In order to get the true ruler onto his throne, they are going to need to join in the country’s battle, which may go into all-out war.
Will It Bomb? This will absolutely jet past Vegas and Speed Racer, and I am definitely confident that it will get into the #2 spot. Iron Man will probably stay at the top for another week.

Reprise (Limited Release): Two friends in Norway are ready to take on the world and it all gets started when they mail off their manuscripts. Sounds like the beginning of a healthy competition. The question is: what awaits them? Judging by the trailer, one achieves a monumental level of success, and the other one is still struggling. You can obviously tell that there will be quite a toll on both their emotional well-being.
Will It Bomb? This has been hitting the festival circuit, and now that it’s in Limited Release it may make a nice amount of change. I haven’t really heard too much about it, however. Everything will depend on how much traffic this film gets in its first run. Let’s see what happens…

That’s going to be all for this week! Hopefully, my predictions will fare a lot better than last week! Once the weekend scores are in, you know that I will back to tell you all about them. All that and more at DIB? early next week! Have a great weekend!

Hello, and welcome to a loaded edition of DIB? You guys are not going to believe this. This week’s Box Office scores had a bit of controversy! Aren’t you just dying to know what it is? Before I spill it, we have to see if my predictions proved true and exact for the third week in a row. Have I done it?

Redbelt: David Mamet takes the story of a mixed martial arts fighter who’s battling with money problems, but that’s just the beginning. Add a whole mess of subplots that interweave like a spiderweb, and you’ve got a film that will really sharpen your mind.
Will It Bomb? While the industry buzz is still harping on the outrageous success of Iron Man, this will make cash, but probably won’t get into the Top 10.
Did It Bomb? I was pleasantly surprised. Now in Wide Release after just a week, this came in at #10, earning $1.24 million.
Outcome: Strike! 0 out of 3.

Speed Racer: Emile Hirsch stars as the eponymous lead in this remake of an extremely popular animated series. The Wachowskis follow up their mega-hit Matrix franchise with this colorful and high-speed flick. Boasting a great cast that includes Susan Sarandon and Matthew Fox, a car-racer’s dream is kept alive, despite numerous obstacles.
Will It Bomb? The sheer power of the #1 film isn’t going to allow anyone to steal its thunder. It’ll make the bottom end of the Top 5, however.
Did It Bomb? It was expected to make a lot more than it did. Obviously, many were pretty surprised that this hit #3, bringing in $18.6 million. I know I was!
Outcome: Score! 1 out of 3.

What Happens in Vegas: Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz hit Las Vegas because they’re both pretty down. Well, after all the drinks, partying, and gambling, what’s left to do? Get hitched!! On the brink of an expected breakup, they hit the jackpot. Would you stay with someone for 3 million dollars? Or would you try to make their lives horrible?
Will It Bomb? I vote that this will make it into the center of the 10, but there’s no stopping Tony Stark and his suit!
Did It Bomb? How about that? This brought in $20.2 million, and jumped into the #2 position!
Outcome: Strike! 1 out of 3.

***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (, The Hollywood Reporter ( and The Internet Movie Database (

So, what’s the dirt, you ask? According to various media sources, there was supposedly an error somewhere in the tabulation regarding the #2 and #3 films (since we all knew what was going to stay at #1). When I checked the takes this past Sunday on IMDb, it claimed that Speed Racer made about $20.2 million and broke into the second spot, with Vegas following in at a close third, with $20 million. Come this past Monday, on another site, the figures themselves were recalculated and it’s been alleged that there may have been a little fluffing going on, possibly by Warner Brothers, the studio that released Speed Racer. I don’t work for the studio, and I cannot speculate what exactly happened, but it’s good to know that someone is keeping an eye open and making sure that the system remains truthful and accurate.

As for my predictions…unfortunately, my luck ran out this time around. Back to the drawing board! A brand new crop of movies are hitting the cinemas in a few days. Can I get my record back up again? Stay tuned for the next installment of WIB? to find out!
