Time magazine is reporting that James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar movie will top $300 million to make, once all production is done. It’s unclear whether or not these costs include marketing or not.
At $300 million, it would make Avatar the most expensive movie ever made, and make it probably the least profitable movie of all time.
I know, the television show “Avatar” is wildly popular, there’s no doubt about that. But, is it popular enough to sell 30 million tickets at $10 a pop, to make its money back?
Maybe, with DVD releases, and special editions, and theater re-releases it’s possible, but unlikely. Only time will tell.
