Good evening, everyone. Here we are, yet again, at the beginning of a new week, so it’s time to find out how the Box Office played out a few days ago!
Welcome to this week’s edition of DIB? I’m anxious to see how the flicks did, and I bet you are, too! Let’s roll!
The Golden Compass: An overwhelming amount of controversy plagued this film, alleging anti-religious undertones in this story of a girl and a really bizarre journey. Will It Bomb? A storm over this kind of theme definitely fortifies curiosity, and despite all the talk, it looks very good. Nicole Kidman really needs to get out of her slump, as well. This will toss out the current #3 flick and will end up between Enchanted and Beowulf. Did It Bomb? Kidman + Controversy = Hit! This ended up at #1, with earnings of $25.8 mill. Not bad! Outcome:Mezza-mezza. ½ out of 3.
Atonement: A 13 year old girl sees her older sister engage in a new romance, and something comes over her! She ends up starting something she shouldn’t have and everyone is spun into her web. Can the years mend the hearts and minds of all involved? Will It Bomb? Everyone loves a drama dripped in sentimentality. This will make money! I bet that it will get into the Top 5, and specifically at #4. Did It Bomb? Making over $816,000 in less than forty theaters? Excellent! I wasn’t aware of this at the time, but apparently this was in limited release. So, it looks like I’m going to have to hold this over as well! Outcome: To be continued… ½ out of 3.
Revolver (Limited Release): Director and Madonna’s hubby Guy Ritchie is back with his latest film. Starring Jason Statham, we have a little tale about a convict hooking up with some shady people to get rid of some other not-so-savory individuals. Will It Bomb?: Not too much publicity has been put out regarding this movie, so it’s mostly word of mouth and Ritchie’s own rep that would guide people in. I doubt that that will be enough to bring in the cash. The opening numbers will certainly have an impact on said success rate. Did It Bomb? Sorry, Guy, but this time, it looks like you couldn’t cut it. With a bit over $41,000 made (and in limited release), this tanked as soon as it opened. Outcome: Score! 1½ out of 3
***Official Box Office tallies and positions according to Variety (variety.com), The Hollywood Reporter (hollywoodreporter.com) and the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com).
That’s all for now, kids. I’ll be back in a couple of days with an all new set of flicks waiting in the wings over at WIB?! DIB? will be back next week with the rundown. I will see you all then!
