Jigsaw Journal #8 and Notes on “Torture Porn”

MTV’s Movie Blog continues their exploration of the Jigsaw Journals with entry number 8. This time it’s the notes that Tobin Bell made about his costume as a pre-Jigsaw John Kramer. What’s fascinating to me is that Bell gets so involved in things like costuming, and what John Kramer would have worn.

In other Saw news, some of the actors have been speaking out against the terms “torture porn” and “gorenography” as they refer to the Saw franchise. On HollywoodToday.net there are quotes from several of the actors about how they feel the series means more than that. Scott Patterson, who plays FBI Agent Strahm, says, “I don’t look at our movies as torture porn. It’s porn if you don’t buy into Jigsaw’s character.”

Ever the well-spoken actor, Tobin Bell talks about Jigsaw as if he’s two steps shy of being Robin Hood. Bell says, “He’s a scientist, a very well read guy, a man of conviction, passionate about what he does. There’s something Shakespearean about him.”

While I don’t know that I would call Jigsaw Shakespearean, Bell and Patterson have a point. It just happens to be the point I’ve been making since the beginning of the series. The gore is only there as an afterthought. It’s the story of John Kramer, and subsequently Jigsaw, that fascinates people. A serial killer that wants his victims to escape and survive is the start of a very compelling story.
