Mike’s Oscar Wrap-Up

Since the Academy Awards aired Sunday night, people have been asking me how I felt about the show, and those who won, and/or didn’t win. So, I decided to throw together a little blurb about it.

I’ll start with what I thought of the show itself: Did I like Jon Stewart? Yes, absolutely. He’s hysterical in most anything he does. Did I get the impression that the crowd liked him? No. Not at all. My feeling is that Hollywood were being typical snobs, and wanted someone bigger and flashier to host. But, why bother? Jon livened things up. And the bit about Clooney getting all the women? Priceless.

Onto the awards: Was I glad Brokeback Mountain didn’t win best picture? Yes. I’m equally glad to say that I’m 100% in approval of Crash‘s win for the category. Why? Simple, Crash was the best movie last year, hands down.

Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman, do I care? Not really. I’m indifferent. I didn’t see Capote and probably won’t. Not my cup of tea. But, from what I hear, his performance was good. After all, would he have won, if he sucked? Probably not.

Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon (who looked amazing, and had one of the best thank you speeches), won for Walk The Line, which I’m excited to watch this weekend. While I haven’t seen the movie, and can’t yet comment on her performance, I’m happy that she beat out the other performers, as I think she was the best actress nominated. (Though I love Keira dearly, she didn’t deserve it as much as Reese)

The rest of the categories, with the exception of Best Supporting Actor/Actress, are a complete bore. Do I really care about Sound Editing, and Screenplay, and all that? No. Not at all. And don’t even get me started on Best song. Seriously. Best Director went to Ang Lee, as we all expected it would. While I haven’t seen Brokeback Mountain, it’s no secret that every critic in the entire world loved it.

So, that’s my Oscar wrap-up, in a nutshell. Overall, I thought the show could have been better, much better. But then again, we say that every year.
