Movie Tunes: 10 Things I Hate About You

Following up last week’s review of The Punisher soundtrack, this week we have a review of the soundtrack to the hit teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

The CD starts with a cover of one of my favorite songs ever – “I Want You To Want Me” (originally performed by Cheap Trick). Letters To Cleo does a great job with the cover, which flows into “FNT” by Semisonic. While their ubiquitous hit song “Closing Time” was great, “FNT” is even catchier. It also accompanies one of the best scenes in the movie – when Kat and Patrick go paintballing.

Following that is the song from the prom scene – “I Know” by Save Ferris. Gotta love a lady who can sing ska music and jump around in platform heels. The song is catchy and makes clever use of the lyrics to “Shout.”

After that comes my favorite song on the whole CD – I even went to see Sister Hazel live in the hopes that they’d play this song (and they did) – “Your Winter.” It’s a beautiful, heartbreaking song. If you do nothing else with this review, download this song.

The next song, “Even Angels Fall” by Jessica Riddle is nice and mellow, but overall forgettable. Actually, the rest of the CD save the last two tracks are pretty forgettable. It’s about here that I remember that I only love about half of this soundtrack.

The only two other remarkable tracks on the disc are tracks 13 and 14. Another Letters To Cleo cover – this time it’s “Cruel To Be Kind” (originally performed by Nick Lowe) – is track 13. It’s also in the prom scene near the end of the movie – when “the Raincoats” come out on stage to play. Track 14 isn’t really that remarkable, but it’s a nice outro.

Tracks You Can’t Miss:

  • Track 1 – “I Want You To Want Me” by Letters To Cleo
  • Track 2 – “FNT” by Semisonic
  • Track 4 – “Your Winter” by Sister Hazel
  • Track 13 – “Cruel To Be Kind” by Letters To Cleo
