I’m not much of a poker freak. I’ve watched those ubiquitous poker tournament shows on TV a couple of times, but I’m nowhere near obsessed with it. Even if you?re a diehard poker fan, you’ll be wincing from boredom if you see this movie.
Eric Bana plays Huck Cheever, a professional poker player, but also a low level con artist. He’s a regular at a hotel in Vegas and he’s always trying to get some cash to play. He’s somewhat of a heel and a player. He has a strained relationship with his father (Robert Duvall), also a professional player. The two of them are always trying to one-up each other.
He meets the sister (Drew Barrymore) of one of his exes (Debra Messing). She’s super-sweet and very naive (Drew likes these kind of parts, doesn’t she!). The budding professional singer falls for Huck’s charms, but alas, he’s the wolf in sheep’s clothing. He snatches money from her and breaks her heart. That’s when it hit bottom.
Now, most of Bana’s facial expressions in the flick went into three categories:
1. Combo of pissed off and wounded.
2. “Apologetic” for wronging someone. Totally faking it! Come on! He wasn’t sorry at all!
3. Nothing at all. Completely blank. Poker face!
On a side note? Drew, I?m sorry. While I love you as an actress, I didn’t believe for one minute that your character was a professional singer. Not with those performances. I apologize again.
This movie ran forever! The action did not keep my attention whatsoever. The dialogue was flat and there was a total lack of chemistry between the two leads. Seriously, it was that bad! Total waste of money!
If you are smart enough to skip this movie, lucky you!
