Madagascar Review

If you are looking for a classic for the whole family, I think you can find one in Madagascar. With great animation, lots of laughs and silly characters, this one has all the ingredients of a movie that you can watch over and over and enjoy.

When it comes to shows that the kids like, the true test for me is if I can watch it more than once. There aren’t very many that I can stomach twice or more. There have been a few, like Toy Story, A Shark Tale and the Emperor’s New Groove to name a few. But usually after the first time, or during the first time, I have had quite enough. I am not a big cartoon or animation guy but as a “family guy” I do appreciate it when a show like Madagascar comes around.

The movie revolves around 4 animals from a New York City zoo that take off on an adventure and end up on the coast of Madagascar. Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo are great friends and share lots of exciting moments sailing on the ocean, running around the jungle and even running from each other on occasion. Soon the animals discover that they really aren’t a good fit for “the wild” and long to get back to New York. Ben Stiller co-stars as the voice of Alex while Jada Pinkett Smith is the voice of Gloria. Our “Friend” David Schwimmer is behind the Melman the Giraffe character and Chris Rock gets most of the funny lines doing Marty the Zebra. Rock is hilarious as he delivers one knee-slapper after another.

The other animals that our heroes cross paths with along the way also add a lot of depth to the movie. Watch out for a small band of penguins that will soon have you saying “Smile and wave boys, just smile and wave.”

Overall Madagascar is a keeper. There are some slow times and some might think that there isn’t enough excitement for adult viewers. I think even if you don’t have children you can sit back and have a good time with this movie. But if you do have children, I have two words for you this Christmas – Stocking Stuffer.
