I was a reluctant fan of the Apatow franchise. I avoided seeing The 40 Year Old Virgin for as long as I could, but couldn’t resist the juvenile charms of Superbad. I also finally managed to watch “Freaks and Geeks” on DVD, and became a big fan of Seth Rogen pre-Knocked Up. Despite having a general dislike of stoner movies, I knew I had to check out The Pineapple Express. I like Seth Rogen and James Franco and the scene from the trailer with Franco insisting they stay and hide because he was already in the dumpster had me sold.
I missed it in theaters, but caught it on Blu-ray last night. It was funny, but not overwhelmingly hilarious like Superbad. It had its funny moments, like the dumpster scene, but wasn’t a laugh out loud comedy.
Rogen was his usual oddly charming self. Franco played the role well. It’s hard to really like either one of them when they spend the entire movie getting high, talking about getting high, or sleeping off the results of their high.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Maybe. It depends on their feelings towards the actors and stoner movies in general. Not being a fan of them myself, I wouldn’t recommend it. If you really like Dazed and Confused, however, and sometimes wonder what. It would look like crossed with a crime caper, then you’ll enjoy this.
Bottom line: I didn’t love it, but I also didn’t hate it.
