Before you write this off as a simple chick flick however, know that my hockey-loving boyfriend liked this movie too.
The story is fairly simple. Career woman Helen Harris (Kate Hudson) gets sole custody of her sister’s three children when her sister and brother-in-law are killed in a car crash. Helen’s other sister Jenny (Joan Cusack) is a mom of the year type who disapproves of the decision.
The movie follows Helen as she learns what it takes to be a mom. She takes the kids to school, where she meets their handsome principal Pastor Dan. She deals with Audrey being a rebellious teenager, Henry’s pet turtle dying, and Sarah’s difficulty with learning to tie her shoes.
She has help from Jenny and Pastor Dan, and a neighbor named Nilma who has numerous children. It’s heartwarming, funny and yet somehow not trite or cheesy.
One last note: While KingSnob Mike is a big fan of Dakota Fanning…I think the young star on the rise is Abigail Breslin who plays little Sarah. More than just an adorable kid, she brings emotion and reality to each one of her roles (including Bo in Signs, and her guest star role of Patty on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”).
