I’m still not really sure what the hell it’s about. I watched it, and people told me it’d make sense when it was all over, and I still don’t get it.
The movie wasn’t even remotely interesting until 1 hour 33 minutes in, that’s when I went “oh really?” because something caught my eye. That lasted a second or two, and happened again at 1 hour 47 minutes, and that was about it.
Will Smith’s great, as usual. Rosario Dawson’s great, as usual, as well. There just isn’t a whole lot to the movie. There’s a lot happening, and a lot you have to try to figure out, it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I think the problem is that all the clues they give throughout the movie (which I’m only assuming exist) get missed, because you’re so bored, you’re checking your iPhone every two minutes.
If I enjoyed it even a little bit, I’d watch it again, in hopes that something would jump out at me, and really “make” the movie for me. I don’t think I can sit through it another two hours, though. It’s not good enough, at least not to me.
Some folks are saying that it’s one of the best movies of the year, and I just don’t see that. Had it made more sense, or had more of a wrap up at the end, maybe. But the way it is, it’s just not a movie that hits you and makes you want to have subsequent viewings.
Maybe people recommended the movie to me, who said it was great, and had a really great ending. I don’t hold it against those people, for having seen it. I just didn’t really “get” the movie. It’s possible I’ll give it a second viewing when it hits DVD shelves later this year, but for now, I have to go with my gut feeling. Seven Pounds just doesn’t stand up to the hype. The ending’s not that good, and the rest of the story only serves to confuse, quite a bit at that.
If you’re curious about what the Seven Pounds title is all about, get in line. I have no idea, and probably won’t figure it out, barring a Q&A with the writer/director. If you’re curious about whether or not you’ll like the film, I can’t say for certain. It’s one of those types of movies that plays differently to different people. You’ll need to check it out for yourself. If you hate it, or if you love it, it’s entirely up to you.
