The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Review

You may recognize the title The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as the title of a good book or perhaps an interesting science fiction TV series. But I can’t imagine anyone recognizing it as a good movie. I guess one word would sum it up…. silly. This movie couldn’t even keep my two boys, aged 11 and 5, interested! This recently released DVD stars Martin Freeman as, well, just a guy who finds out his buddy is an alien and they, well, hitchhike around the galaxy together when the earth blows up. The film also stars Mos Def as the alien buddy and Zooey Deschanel as Freeman’s love interest, Trillian. The best performance was by Sam Rockwell as wacky president of the universe Zaphod Beeblebrox (say that 5 times really fast). He actually made me laugh on a couple of occasions. I really don’t think that the cast blended well, but trying to say a lot of corny lines just doesn’t help that at all.

The movie had all kinds of neat special effects though, like Rockwell’s head that snapped back like a Pez dispenser to reveal an uglier meaner version of himself. But even that got old after awhile and I just couldn’t wait to see some credits rolling. I’m guessing that the “Deleted Scenes” section of the DVD had the best stuff in it, but I really couldn’t bear to chance it.

I hate to refer to this old cliche, but here it goes…….”Read the book”.
