The Interpreter Review

The new video release, The Interpreter was a pleasant surprise for me. I wasn’t sure how the combination of Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn would be. The last few movies I had seen them in individually were disturbing (Penn in The Assassination of Richard Nixon)and down right dull (Kidman in Birth). Both are very convincing in this political thriller about a United Nations interpreter who overhears a possible threat against a visiting ruler. Enter Penn, a Secret Service agent who isn’t quite sure what is going on, except for a little chemistry with Kidman.

The storyline keeps your attention through it’s twists and turns, making you wonder how involved Kidman really is in the alleged murder plot. It remained quite suspenseful and almost believable. Director Sydney Pollack does a great job of pulling you into the emotions and heartache of the characters.

This wasn’t the greatest thriller I have seen but I would definitely recommend it for a rental. I’m still wanting to see a Ridgemont High role for Sean Penn, but this will have to do for now.
