The Machinist Review

Watching The Machinist is an… experience. The first time Christian Bale is shown on screen, it almost made my physically sick. The amount of devotion he put into this role is astonishing. Astonishing and record breaking. Bale dropped record weight to play Trevor, an insomniac. 63 pounds, to be exact. Which he gained back in just 5 months later, to play Batman, in Batman Begins.

The story of Trevor is one that is ordinary. He doesn’t sleep, and hasn’t for a year. He becomes slightly delusional, thinking that someone’s showing up at his job, trying to sabotage his life.

While the movie itself is nothing to need to watch twice, Bale’s performance is top notch. He nails the role perfectly. You believe he’s an insomniac. You believe someone is out to get him. You believe everything he wants you to believe. Mainly because he’s an amazing actor, and way too underrated in today’s world. Bale puts everything he has into the role, emotionally, and physically. Losing the weight for the role was a feat that has yet to be matched by any other actor.

The Machinist is one of those movies that you should definitely see, but not more than once. Bale puts on a killer performance, coupled with Jennifer Jason Leigh’s “I’m just a girl in the wrong place” prostitute role. If you’re a fan of Christian Bale’s work (which obviously we are, here at MovieSnobs), you should have already seen this movie. If you’re not a diehard fan, but want to see a disturbing movie, check it out.
