After watching I Am Legend in a New York City theater and then going out into the hustle and bustle of the still very much alive city, the special effects used to make New York look deserted and empty were that much more impressive. NYMag.com has a great visual representation and explanation of how the opening scene was created.
I also found another random blog that has pictures of the bus stop ads put up on 56th and 5th during the shooting of the movie. They’re pretty creepy, especially if you had seen them at the time and not realized they were part of a movie shoot.
