Verbinski Says No to Pirates 4

In a bold, and maybe not the most financially smart decision, Gore Verbinski has turned down the opportunity to direct the upcoming fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Verbinski graciously declined citing that he wanted to spend more time and energy working on the upcoming movie adaption of the Bioshock video game.

He is quoted as saying

I had a fantastic time bringing “Pirates” to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team, I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.

Personally, I’m torn.  I thought the first two Pirates movies were great. The third lacked a bit and spent too much energy focusing on CGI effects.

The question now is, who’ll take the helm.  No word from the studio, yet, as to who they’ve got in their sights. Though I’m sure we’ll hear some news soon.

Johnny Depp Is Going To Be A Busy Guy

Just since I left the office last night, all sorts of Depp news has hit the wire.  Rumors have been confirmed.

  • Depp will reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean flick.
  • Depp has been cast as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland (no surprise, we know Burton has a bromance with Depp.)
  • Depp has been cast in The Lone Ranger, as Tonto.

Also, in other awesome movie news:

  • Cars 2 is being worked on for release in 2011.
  • Iron Man comes out on Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday.
  • Warner Brothers has green lit a prequel to I Am Legend.

It was a pretty busy night for movie news, apparently.

Without any further ado, here are the winners of the 2008 Snobbies (don’t forget that some categories have spoilers):
